OCCURRENCE AND IMPORTANCE

1)Black stem rust disease appears on the wheat crop.

2)This disease also appears in an epiphytotic from many country. –In northern India the disease dose not appear before March. In southern India, the disease, How ever many appear as early as the last week of November.

3)The disease has been extensively studied in Europe,

USA and other country, where it often causes

severe losses in yield.

The causal organism (pathogen)

Pathogen : Puccinia graminis tritici.

Host : Triticum aestivum.

Symptom of the disease

Symptom of wheat plant :

The symptoms first

appearance on the stem, leaf

sheaths.

In the early part of season the symptoms are every common on appear glumes and eve the beard.

Disease control

i) Some varieties are very useful to prevent most of the races of stem rust pathogen like – s227, s307, s308, etc.

ii) 4-5 times application of zinc sulphate and nabam.

iii) Avoided the Nitrogenous manures.

iv) Proper drainage in the wheat field be

maintained, as the dampness.
