PREFACE

We are pleased to present this second self-study report of Ranchi College, Ranchi.

Since its modest beginning as Intermediate College in 1926, Ranchi College has made great strides in the last eight decades, and is now one of the most respected institutions of higher learning in Jharkhand. In fact, the history of development of higher education in Jharkhand and the growth of Ranchi College are indistinguishable.

Ranchi College was started in the then Zam indar i Hostel (at present the women’s section of Marwari College) and was affiliated to old Patna University.

The people of Chotanagpur were not satisfied and they made persistent demand for a Degree College. The then Br itish adm inistrators, however, took no initiative in this regard.

After the end of Wor ld War II, the popular provincial Congress government decided that a first-grade College was needed here. Thus the Ranchi Government Degree College was established on 1st August 1946, with Arts faculty, and was formally inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Bihar, Dr. Srikrishna Sinha. In 1949, the science section began to function in the college. At about the same time the name Ranchi Govenment Degree College was changed to Ranchi College.

In 1951, the college was granted post-graduate status with the beginning of MA in History and Hindi. The following year MA/MSc in Anthropology was introduced. By 1955, Honours in Science subjects also began to be taught.

At this time Ranchi College was located at the Training School Building in Zila School, Ranchi. The present site of the college was chosen by the government in 1954. The foundation stone was laid by the then Governor of Bihar, Dr. R. R.

Diwakar, on 2nd December 1954. The ceremony was attended, among other dignitaries, by Dr. S S Bhatnagar, the then Chairman of UGC. The construction of the building was started in 1958 and completed by 1960.

In 1960 the old Bihar University was bifurcated, and Ranchi University came into existence. Ranchi College was attached to Ranchi University as a premier Constituent College. In 1965, Ranchi University post-graduate departments were created, though they continued to share the Ranchi College building. In course of time, the social sciences and humanities departments were

shifted to their own newly constructed buildings near Ranchi College. The post- graduate departments in science, however, continue to occupy the premises of Ranchi College. In 1984, Ranchi College was again raised to post-graduate status, with the beginning of Masters teaching of 12 subjects in Arts and Science subjects.

Since its inception, a large percentage of the students in the college have belonged to scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, backward Muslims, and other backward classes. This has increased with the passage of time. Also, the College has always considered the extra-curricular and co-curricular activities equally important. The college sports and games have remained under the charge of the Athletic Club from the very beginning. The President of the Athletic club has been a member of the faculty of the college while, the secretary has been a student. In the last five decades, various teams of the college have won a number of tournaments at the university, inter-university, state, and national level. Since the 1950’s, NCC has been an important aspect of the extension activities of the college and the cadets have won laurels right from its inception.

The Institution was granted autonomy on the 11 th of June 2006. At present Ranchi College has more than 3200 students in 22 conventional departments plus such frontier subjects as self-financing courses as B. Ed., L LM, Computer application, Information Technology, Environmental Science, Electronics, GIS, and Tribal Management .

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has given us an opportunity for introspection. The preparation of this Self-study Report has opened our eyes to some of our strength and weaknesses. At the same time it has provided us with a proper perspective in setting our goals and re-orient our vis ion. We hope we shall be able to gear ourselves to the challenges ahead – the challenges that

have come up through the continuing process of Liberalisation, Privatisation, and Globalisation.

After the receipt of NAAC accreditation and ‘College with potential for excellence’ on the 4th of August 2010 the college has made great strides in both the academic and administrative spheres. There has been a thorough change in the syllabi of all the departments with the introduction of the semester system and revamping of the departments. The college has now fulfilled its basic requirements of electricity and water supply and backup for the same to maintain its academic atmosphere. The examination department has been overhauled to take in the pressures of the semester system and the college has been made wi-fi for instant access to information.

We are now moving into the interactive learning system to upgrade the teaching methods and striving to move on to make the institution an academ ic hub with new courses and new oppurtunities.

We have made every effort to present the data in an objective and meaningful way. The college being very old, some of the documentary evidence is lacking. We apologize for this lacuna however; we have revamped our information system with the introduction of a new information software system so that record keeping will be more fruitful and informative.

We look forward to the visit of NAAC team at their earliest.
