Global overview of Tecnimont

Tecnimont is a leading engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company operating world- wide in the areas of chemicals, petrochemicals, oil and gas, power and other sectors of the process plant industry. It is part of the Montedison Group, which was established in 1966 and a result of the merger of Montecatini (existing since 1888) and Edison (existing since 1884), two major names in the Italian chemicals, fertilisers, petrochemicals and energy industries. In 1973,Tecnimont was

established as a spin-off of the Engineering division of Montedison. Over these few years, it had inherited extensive experience and capabilities from its founders, Montedison, and earlier Montecatini and Edison.

The Maire Group acquired Tecnimont in October 2005.The newly formed Group, named Maire Tecnimont S.p.A., has marked a substantial step in the development of the Italian engineering and contracting industry. The acquisition had a

75 After Tecnimont was established in 1973, it

leveraged the strengths of Montecatini and Montedison in the polymers sector by setting up various plants for the production of PP and PE at Vadodara (Gujarat), Nagothane (Maharashtra) and Auriya (Uttar Pradesh).

In February 1996,Tecnimont decided to strengthen its presence in India by acquiring 25 per cent stake in an existing Indian engineering and contracting company, ICB Limited.Tecnimont’s participation in the equity was later increased to 50 per cent in 1997, to form a joint venture, christened Tecnimont ICB Private Ltd.. (TICB).TICB is today one of the leading engineering companies in India. It employs more than 1,200 engineers and technicians in the country. It is active in India and abroad and

integrates the work of Tecnimont’s European offices in the development of projects, with high quality and competitive costs. It has its head office and engineering centres at Mumbai (Maharashtra), and support offices at New Delhi, Kolkata (West Bengal), Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Saudi Arabia.

Tecnimont in India

Montecatini, and then Montedison and thereafter Tecnimont have been active in India since the 1930s by supplying technologies and design for over fifty plants involved in the production of fertilisers, chemicals and polyolefins. Montecatini’s collaboration with India began in the years following the

declaration of the country’s Independence.

Montecatini signed a twenty-year contract with the Indian Government for the production of fertilisers, thus playing a contributory role in the country’s programme to resolve its food shortage problem.

Amongst the notable projects implemented by Montecatini between the 1930s and the 1960s, include the nitric acid plant at Aruvankadu (Tamil Nadu) and fertiliser complex at Sindri (Bihar).

After the formation of Montedison in 1966, it implemented a large number of plants for the production of fertilisers across the country.

Ammonia and urea plants were built at Neyveli (Tamil Nadu), Kochi (Kerala), Durgapur and Haldia (West Bengal), Barauni and Sindri (Bihar), Namrup (Assam), Ramagundam (Andhra Pradesh) and Talcher (Orissa). The company has also played a pivotal role in the implementation of plants for the production of aluminium alloys, aluminium chloride and oxide (in Mettur,Tamil Nadu) and in dyestuff and intermediates and acrylic fibres (in Kalyan and Thane in Maharashtra).

completed by second half of 2009

Future plans

Tecnimont is scheduled to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Engineers India Limited (EIL) in the middle of February 2007.This MoU is related to a joint venture agreement between Tecnimont and EIL in order to develop common business perspectives in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).The joint venture will focus on the oil and gas and industrial infrastructure sectors, with a starting manpower of about 150 professionals coming from Italy, India and local countries.

EIL is one of the largest Indian engineering companies having manpower of more than 3,000 specialists. It operates as Engineering Contractor and Consultant in the oil and gas, petrochemicals and infrastructure sector for both Indian and international markets. The combined strengths of the Indian and Italian engineering giants would enable the joint venture to reap the benefits of synergy towards further consolidation of Tecnimont’s presence in UAE.
