and motor vehicle theft. Although arson is not included in the property crime total, data showed that the number of arson offenses decreased 10.0 percent when comparing the number reported for the first 6 months of 2003 to that for the first 6 months of 2002.

Table 1 shows the percent change in offenses reported to law enforcement by population group during the period examined. The percent change by geographic region is shown in Table 2. The percent change reflected in Table 3 is for consecutive years from 1999-2003. Table 4 presents 2002 and 2003 data submitted by agencies having resident populations of 100,000 and over. All data in this report are preliminary and are based on the number of offenses reported to law enforcement agencies providing 3 to 6 comparable months of data January through June 2002 and 2003.
