HYDERABAD: Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her maiden union budget approved 80 crore allocated to the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) during the interim Budget released in February this year.

"With close to one third of our total student population as PhD, we have a strong research base in various areas such as 5G, energy, environment, sustainability, nanotechnology etc. In addition, we have new initiatives such as BTech in AI, bachelor in design, MTech in climate change among others. The allocation will strengthen our present and future teaching and research activities," said Ch Subramanyam, acting director of IIT-H. Overall, 23 IITs across the country will receive funding of 6,409.95 crore during the ensuing financial year. Apart from this, 4 crore was also approved for the Tribal University that is set to come up in Mulugu in Warangal district. The fund was allocated during the interim budget declared earlier this year. The Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) welcomed the MHRD's deliberation to set up a Higher Education Commission (HEC) under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister of India. "We thoroughly support the Union government's proposal in the National Education Policy draft to establish a HEC under the chairmanship of the PM who can directly take charge of the innovations and research," said T Papi Reddy, TSCHE chairman.
