ROLE OF YOGA IN MENTAL HYGIENE Asha Jain
Udaipur (Raj.) 1. INTRODUCTION
Swami Vivekananda was first to introduce yoga to Western world in the 20th Century. Later Yoga Gurus from India moved to educate the World about it. The word "Yoga" is derived from sanskrit word
"Yuj" which means to attach, join or harness.
2. BHAGAVAD GITA – LORD KRISHNA DEFINES YOGA
Lord Krishna defines yoga as “Samatvam Yoga Uchyate” Yoga is a balanced state.
Yoga is a balanced state of the body and mind. Yoga is a balanced state of emotions. Yoga is a balanced state of thoughts and intellect. Yoga is a balanced state of behavior. We are excited in the situation of pleasure and we become sad when it is a negative situation. Yoga is to maintain equilibrium of the mind in any situation.
3. MENTAL HEALTH IN CURRENT ERA 3.1 What is Health?
WHO (The World Health Organization) defined health not merely as an absence of infirmity or disease, but as a complete state of mental, social and physical well- being, Recently spiritual well-being has been added as the fourth step of health.
3.2 What is Mental Health?
A state of mind characterized by emotional well-being, odd behavioral adjustment, relative freedom from anxiety and disabling symptoms, and a capacity to establish constructive relationships and cope with the ordinary demands and stresses of life.
Mental health includes social, emotional, spiritual, psychological, and financial well being, Mental health is important for everyone and every stage of life from childhood to old age. It is also includes how we react on stress, how we handle in difficult situation, how we make choices in our life.
3.3 Some Causes of Mental Illness 1. Heredity/genetic or brain
chemistry.
2. Injury in head.
3. Personal and family problem.
4. Trauma.
5. Financial problem.
6. Not getting love or attention etc 3.4 How to Analyze Mentally- Ill Person
1. Isolating oneself.
2. Too much mood swings.
3. Getting angry on small things.
4. Sleeping too much or getting insomnia.
5. Eating too much or very less.
6. Talking too much or talking less.
7. Having no energy.
8. Less constraint.
9. Feeling hopelessness.
10. Suicidal thoughts.
11. Harming oneself as well as others.
12. Dependent on smoking, drinking and drugs for overcome problems and always thinking negative.
13. Feel helpless and not able to perform task/work etc.
14. Feeling numb.
3.5 Components of Mental Health 1. Positive thoughts
2. Self belief
3. Doing something productive in daily life
4. Love for oneself as well as others 5. Doing yoga and pranayama
(physical activity)
6. Ability to deal with every situation of life
7. Feeling happy with oneself and being kind to others
3.6 What is Mental Hygiene
Mental health is closely linked with the mental hygiene. Mental Hygiene is a science that deals with the procedure of achieving mental health and preserving it in the society. The key objective of mental hygiene is to attain proper mental health.
3.7 Objectives of Mental Hygiene
1. To develop self respect and respect for others.
2. To help realize one‟s potentials.

4. IMPACT OF CORONA VIRUS ON MENTAL HEALTH AND ROLE OF YOGA AFTER PANDEMIC
The pandemic has brought in a lot of uncertainty about each and everything.
Anyone can literally die the next day and no one know. People have become slaves to their situation. it is natural for anxiety, stress, exhaustion, sleeping disorders and other issues. And here comes the role of yoga – it‟s not about becoming passive about anything but accepting a lot of things.
Yoga helps to adjust an entirely new style of living, working and socializing. Yoga helps to improving one‟s thoughts that today‟s lows can easily convert into tomorrow‟s highs Even in conditions like Schizophrenia, the brain networks are repaired by yoga in addition to Schizophrenia getting better Research studies suggest that yoga and regular physical exercises increase body awareness, relieve stress, reduce muscle tension, strain, and inflammation, sharpens attention and concentration, and calms the nervous system.
Yoga helps us in gaining control over our emotions and to become aware and yoga therapy release healthy brain chemicals like endorphins and dopamine.
These chemicals in return help us balance our mood and anyone will able to face common mental health issues like depression, anxiety, mood disorders, lack of patience and many other mental health conditions.
So, with the rise of a new sun, a new day in your life, Enlighten yourself with the energy and power of yoga. Get involved and feel the positive change in your life, in your daily routine and get rid of all the anxiety and mental stress related concerns. Wake up to a fresh new life every day with a positive energy from
within, say Hello to Yoga and keep the
„magic of happiness‟ alive.
The supreme goal of doing Yoga is to attain "Moksha". And that is achieved by controlling the body and the mind. The meditative meaning of yoga is to release any suffering and find inner peace &
salvation.
