SURVEY ON GREEN COMPUTING A STEP TO SAVE ENVIRONMENT

Abstract- Green computing as name itself depicts eco- friendly use of computer and its interconnected resources. It is a very useful approach in which development of computer and its related devices, their disposal or refurbishing is done by taking care of surrounding and environment ethically. Environmental science can be studied effectively that use developing, disposing and reprocessing of computer and other electronic devices. It is a technique by using which there will be reduction in power consumption and green house gas emission by computer and other electronic devices. In this paper, survey is done which depicts the necessity of green computing for the society for sustainable development.

Index Terms: Green computing, environment, computer, green house gases, energy.

1 INTRODUCTION

Green computing is an advancement of using computing and information technology to accomplish and improve overall technical practices. At present environmental organizations as well as other industries are practising eco-friendly and power saving computing resources. Currently computer industries are paying more attention in going green for public relations and low costs.

1.1 Importance of Green Computing:

Green computing is beneficial to the environment. Minimized energy consumption from green techniques leads to reduceCO2 emissions, restricting from a concession of the fossil gas used in electricity and transportation. Saving power and sources saves money by adapting reduce, recycle and reuse techniques.

1.2 Administration and Green Computing:

When look into green solution to computer industries, institutions we should give importance to technology like cloud computing. Importantly, cloud computing decreases the requirement of hardware like servers. In short, cloud computing allows organisations to decrease their requirement of large, heavy, energy-eating servers via rearranging them on the Internet. Cloud computing may also be used in areas like networking, records garage, software applications, and operating systems, again, mostly avoiding the requirement of hardware.

1.3 Individual Green Computing:

There are many other schemes at the non-public level. Potency control can be easy and effective way of saving green whilst keeping electricity. There are many operating systems which are having in built electricity saving setting, there are even a various products that display and adapt electricity stages to improve overall performance and reduces electricity wastages. Some course defenders can help in minimising power consumption, like a computeris turned off, and responding by way of reducing power consumption of any peripheral machines, along with like printers and scanners.

1.4 Organisation and Individual Green Computing:

Actually, newly suggested computing initiatives can get hold of financial savings in both large and little ways. Technologies that shop paper, like e-mail, can have a large effect on prices and the surrounding. As organizations increase techniques and behaviour of

maintenance, easy ways like emailing memos or printing in smaller fonts can extend in the spot results. Schemes like telecommuting or teleconferences resultsin add on benefits by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide emitted through the tour.

2 SURVEY

1. Mavinder Singh (2016) [1] suggested, preferring energy star labelled products. Energy stared products are manufactured by considering green computing and its features.

Main feature of these products is less power consumption. These devices are programmed power down to low power state when they are not in use. Also according to him a simple way to reduce co2 emission from computer is to shut down computers, when they are not in use. Even he suggested opting sleep mode, hibernate mode, to avoid excess power consumption. He concluded that green computing have in view of minimizing undesirable and ill effects of computers on environment by decreasing water, air, and soil pollution.

2. Gaurav Dhawan (2017)[2] on chemical element used in computer like Lead, Mercury, and Cadmium. Printed circuit boards are soldered by using lead. Mercury is utilised in batteries switches and printed circuit board. Cadmium is used in resistor for chips and in semiconductor. These type of chemical elements may cause dangerous impact on kidneys, nervous systems. He also suggested power management techniques like standby mode can save up to 80% of power consumption, hibernate could save 96% of power, laptops saves 80% more power than desktops. He suggested to reuse, refurbish, recycle technique. Reuse means donate computer components to schools, libraries, Refurbish is while upgrading, upgrade CPU and memory chip. Recycle to reduce waste and toxins. He highlighted on application of green computing by Efficient Resource Energy Management in Data Centres, Green Cloud Computing in Energy Efficiency, Green Wireless Network, Green Parallel Computing of Big Data Systems, Pre-emptive Priority Based Job Scheduling Algorithm in Green Cloud Computing, Green cloud computing using genetic algorithm. A huge amount of energy is consumed in cloud computing applications hosted by Data centre’s which is having high operational costs and carbon footprints to the environment. High energy consumption reduces the profit margin of Cloud providers, and leads to high carbon emissions. To reduce impact of cloud computing on environment energy-efficient solutions are must to be implemented. He winded up by saying carbon emission from computer usage should be minimised.

3. Mrs. Geetika Pankaj Goyal (2015) [3] focused on few facts about computers. Like Even if monitor is off computer requires eighty five watts power, 226.8 kg of CO2 emission is possible by one PC in one year. One tree can absorbs 6.8 kg of CO2annually, and then nearly 35 trees are to be planted to avoid bad impact of CO2 emission per year.

She suggested some methods to be adopted to avoid ill effects of computers on environment, like to operate two or more logical PC systems, one should use one hardware. Terminal server system can be used to connect multiple users to share data with central server. Use of power potency, sleep mode, advanced power management of contemporary computers scan save power consumption. LCD and diode monitors can be the alternative to of cathode-ray tube monitor. Quantity of energy consumed is minimized by the use of Energy Star rating.

4. Dr. S. Taruna et.al (2014) [4] surveyed and found that electronic products are used for small duration and older products are dumped rapidly due to technology up gradation. Electronic gadgets can be replaced more easily than their servicing is more observed reason of this problem. Generally electronic wastes were thrown away, dumped in unused land, land filling. According to their observation they suggested

few policies to be adopted like developing countries should refrain to import cheap e- waste from developed countries for production of other products which charges very low to them. Other solution suggested is that all citizens, consumers and manufacturers can recommend procuring products which can be recycled. Instead of elective one, Green IT subject must be compulsory in educational field. Student can give more innovative ideas to protect environment and preserve natural resources.

Policies for encouragement like scholarship, awards should be introduced to have more input in this field. If good products at lower cost are available in market then consumers will be paying more attention to purchase them. Information, whether electronic gadget is green product or not should be clearly mentioned. The manufacturing companies which overrule Green ICT policies should be levied extra taxes.

5. Prantoshet. al (2012) [5] highlighted the use of route data to another data centre for resource allocation mechanism. The Energy cost is minimized by allocating algorithm.

Virtualization is considered as single and dominant system which helps in cooling the system to reduce power consumption. Objective of her research were to get knowledge of green technology and green computing, to know about advantages, approach of learning, organizational need of green computing, main challenges and opportunities of green computing. According to her study energy consumption, Material cycling, Power management, Ergonomics, Virtualization promotion, Using hazards free material and many more are the parts of green computing. Telecommuting is an efficient method which promotes the system of green computing. It accumulates energy, uses of many computers and devices and ultimately money.

3 CONCLUSION

In this survey we in we conclude that green computing is the potential technology which will facilitate the path to reduce IT waste, green house gas emission. The implementation of Green computing can drastically change ecology, environment, energy consumption and financial saving. Awareness can be made among all citizens about green computing with the help of social media in the form of messages, advertisement hoardings. The survey of different articles shows the measures of using old systems and also donating them, reducing use of papers, hardware, managing e-waste charity funds, shutting down systems when they are not in use which help to reduce energy consumption. The green IT idea should include new electronic gadgets and services with best possible efficiency and all possible options towards energy saving. The corporate organizations, college and schools must take more green initiatives. By adopting green computing practices we can get an eco- friendly environment, along with other benefits like cost reduction, energy saving and waste reduction.
