In memory of Professor Parvane Vosoough (1925 - 2013)

Professor Parvane Vosoough oncology subspecialist and director of the Mahak Board of Trustees who col- laborated with the founders of the institute since the be- ginning of its foundation, passed away in the morning of May 29th, 2013. She helped thousands of children suf- fering from cancer in the course of their treatment and recovery through her knowledge and science. Since Chil- dren’s Subspecialty Cancer Hospital became operational, she voluntarily dedicated her science and precious mo- ments of her life to children suffering from cancer as the head of the hospital’s scientific department.

Dr. Parvane Vosoough was born in March 1925 in Tafresh, Iran. She received her medicine degree in 1964 from Tehran University’s Medical School, and later undertook her pediatric specialty and subspecialty courses in universities of Cam- bridge, Massachusetts, and Illinois. She attended subspecialty courses in pediatric oncology and cancer at the University of Washington. Professor Vosoough began practicing medicine in Iran in 1971. She was one of the founders of the subspe- cialty pediatric oncology in Iran, and launched the pediatric Hematology and Oncology department at AliAsghar Hospital.

In addition, as a result of her volunteer attendance and scientific guidance, the Mahak Children’s Subspecialty Cancer Hospital began its activities in 2007. It has successfully treated 1460 children to date.

Dr Vosoough continued her efforts to improve and serve children suffering from cancer with her kindness, patience, valuable knowledge and detachment from material issues till the last day of her life. She has left us more than 100 articles and books on pediatric cancer and blood diseases.

Her active participation in associations and professional international programs such as the Society of International Pediatric Cancer (SIOP), the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), the International Network of Cancer Treat- ment and Research (INCTR), Middle East Childhood Cancer Alliance (MECCA), Pediatric Cancer Program in developing Countries (PODC), President of the children’s Cancer and blood subspecialty board, and member of Iranian Academy of Medical Sciences, and member of the editorial board of the Basic & Clinical Cancer Research all indicate her professional knowledge and expertise.

Cancer Research Center expresses its condolences to Dr. Vosoogh’s esteemed family and her colleagues at Mahak Hospital, and to all her students and colleagues. We hope that her efforts to reach higher goals and her path in promoting knowledge and science will be emulated by all students and followers of this leading cultured figure.
