An introduction of USSD

What is USSD?

- USSD, Stands for “Unstructured Supplementary Service Data”

- It Allows a 2-way exchange of data by sending text message between a mobile phone and an application program known as USSD gateway by using any simple GSM mobile phone

- It can be used for menu based information services

- It’s messages are up to 182 alphabetic characters in length

(6)

It is a GSM technology used to send text between a mobile & apps in the network.

Enables session based communication between application server at the network side and the mobile user.

USSD information is sent directly from a sender’s mobile handset to an

application platform handling the USSD

The connection remains open, allowing a two-way exchange of a sequence of data.

The user composes a message—

usually rather cryptic—on the phone keyboard.

USSD is real-time, menu driven and interactive

How it works?

What are the main features of USSD and how does it work?

USSD Statistics

(Source: Mobile Money Staate of the Industry 2014, GSMA).

2009 2014

USSD technology has experienced a renaissance with the recent sharp rise of mobile money initiatives worldwide.

 Number of mobile money initiatives has grown an astonishing 670%

 Out of the 255 currently active mobile money initiatives, 86% of them are USSD driven

USSD Advantages

- The USSD technology is supported by most phone models

- Over 90% of the global GSM network infrastructure and almost all of the mobile phones available today support transportation of USSD messages.

- USSD has no dependency on OS types - USSD is real-time, menu driven and

interactive

- USSD messages are not stored on the mobile phone

- Easy to navigate, no need to remember any keywords, URLs, etc.

- Real-time and instant messaging service capability - up to seven times faster than SMS for two-way transactions

- Supports menu-based applications facilitating more user interactions

- USSD services available on the home

network are also accessible while

roaming. Unlike SMS, there are no

charges for this.

(11)

USSD application is developed only for updating the services and not for registration of new beneficiaries.

USSD Gateway is

‘Operator Dependant’

Can not redialed, but can save in contact list

(it is like dialing

‘Balance Enquiry’ for the mobile)

Session opens for 3 minutes and allows 30

seconds to response for each screen

The maximum length of a USSD message (a

USSD message is what one sees on the

handset when he enters a USSD service) is 160 bytes

- A text message is first sent to a sender’s Short Message Service Center (SMSC) before the SMSC tries to deliver the text message to the recipient. The sender receives an indication of whether the text was successfully received by the SMSC; however, the text message is not guaranteed to reach the recipient instantly.

- Unlike Short Message Service (SMS) messages, USSD messages create a real-time connection during a USSD session. The connection remains open, allowing a two-way exchange of a sequence of data. This makes USSD more responsive than services that use SMS.

Diff. to SMS

(14)

USSD Format

A typical USSD message starts with an asterisk (*) followed by digits that comprise commands or data. Groups of digits may be separated by additional asterisks. The message is terminated with a number sign (#)

Communication

MS initiates USSD communication by entering Man Machine Interface(MMI) strings, which contain service code and service information related to desired service.

Any network entity is able to start a USSD communication with an MS. Network initiated communication is started manually by an

application under the control of network operator

or a kind of event catcher.

Areas of Use

Information check applications, such as news, weather,

horoscope

Balance check Bank applications, such as money transfer, account check

Mobile ticket application, such as buying train and concert tickets

Advertisement applications, such as the operator can advertise a product on the name of a company

Subscriber information

applications, such as subscriber is informed after each call in order to indicate remaining balance

powerpoint

Subscription based applications, such as the subscriber may sub- scribe a sport event and it is informed if any status change in the event occurs

Instant messaging applications,

the subscriber may login/logout a

chat application and send/receive

messages

(23)

Uses

- When a user sends a message to the phone company network, it is received by a computer dedicated to USSD. The computer's response is sent back to the phone,

generally in a basic format that can easily be seen on the phone display. Messages sent over USSD are not defined by any standardization body, so each network operator can implement whatever is most suitable for its customers.

- Application hides the details of the USSD protocol from the user.

- USSD is sometimes used in conjunction with SMS. The user sends a request to the network via USSD, and the network replies with an acknowledgement of receipt:

"Thank you, your message is being processed. A message will be sent to your phone."
