SERIES EDITOR FOREWORD

Therefore, I urge the reader to consider the significance of the title of this new and ground-breaking book: Vicarious Trauma - trauma by association with the traumatized. This book is also part of the emergence of modern disaster management with practical standards that focus on the caregiver as well as the trauma survivor.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

INTRODUCTION

It also discusses the role of mental health providers at different stages of the disaster timeline. A number of self-administered tools that assess symptoms of vicarious trauma are available to mental health professionals.

WHAT IS VICARIOUS TRAUMA?

Recent changes in the definition of post-traumatic stress disorder include specific mention of experiencing "first-hand or repeated exposure to aversive details of the traumatic event (not through media, pictures, television or film, unless work-related)" (American Psychiatric Association, 2013 ). Several constructs have emerged in the literature to describe these effects of indirect trauma exposure on professional helpers.

WHAT ARE THE BARRIERS TO

ADDRESSING VICARIOUS TRAUMA?

A major barrier to solving the problem is understanding and defining it, as there is no universal theory or definition of secondary traumatization. Clinician time and its management are important in solving the problem of VT and STS.

WHAT DO WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DISASTERS?

How disaster programs are funded affects disaster response strategies and the mental health services provided. The mental health consequences of a disaster increase as the ratio of victims to nonvictims increases (Green, 1982). The role of mental health providers in disaster management has grown significantly in the post-9/11 era and continues to expand.

Throughout the course of a disaster, mental health providers can participate in disaster program evaluation and empirical research opportunities to better understand and meet the mental health needs of the disaster community (see Table 4.3). Lessons learned from New York State's mental health response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Finally, the creators of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) organized a recent consensus effort, derived from research on risk factors and existing PFA models, to create a version of MHFA that identifies the most useful principles for helping others after potentially traumatic experiences. HOW DO WE UNDERSTAND DISASTER-RELATED VICARIOUS

TRAUMA, SECONDARY TRAUMATIC STRESS, AND COMPASSION

FATIGUE?

The most recent evidence of this is the injured survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing in April 2013. Funding for mental health response activities is provided through the state mental health agency in the form of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). disaster preparedness model, Crisis Counseling Assistance and Training Program or what is commonly known as CCP (SAMHSA DTAC, 2013). After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, New York State launched the largest mental health response in the nation's history.

154.2 million was a total of more money than had been awarded to all the CCPs in the program's history combined. Staff are expected to use only those components of the PFA that are still applicable to the needs of survivors in the post-acute phase of the disaster.

WHAT IS VICARIOUS RESILIENCE?

Assume for a moment that you, as a well-intentioned therapist, endeavor to help individuals share and process their traumatic experiences. For the next few minutes I stood at that window with other staff and some patients we were treating. While some patients in the day treatment program suffered from disorders where there is a loss of reality, this particular patient was not one of them, and I believe his account.

Most of the patients in the day treatment program that day, plagued by the most serious and chronic psychiatric illnesses, could handle this situation as well as [the] staff. Vincent's Hospital only needed our psychiatric services because the injured people we expected in the ER never arrived and died along with the collapsed towers.

WHAT FACTORS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH VICARIOUS RESILIENCE?

If a clinician is able to embrace these fundamental changes, they may be more likely to experience vicarious resilience. Although not well researched, a number of qualitative studies suggest that positive acceptance of change resulting from work with trauma victims may lend itself to vicarious resilience or at least an improved view of one's work as a trauma clinic. In addition, increasing awareness of the concepts of vicarious trauma and vicarious resilience in a supervision or training session can further assist in the development of a self-care plan.

Other organizational factors that may help promote vicarious resilience include caseload management and provision of training or continuing education opportunities. Academic research involving the analysis of religiosity and/or spirituality as a statistical predictor of vicarious traumatization and vicarious resilience has, with good reason, yielded mixed results.

WHAT ARE THE POSITIVE EFFECTS OF WORKING WITH VICTIMS

OF TRAUMA?

So why would the therapist report that he felt "'driven' by the indomitable spirit of the human condition". The client was initially reluctant to participate in treatment and provide details about the traumatic events. The therapist in the neighboring community was one of the few experienced mental health professionals in the rural areas affected by the tornado.

These factors, combined with the recent increase in the therapist's caseload as well as the graphic nature of the trauma, may increase the therapist's risk of experiencing VT. Many mental health professionals who work with trauma victims may be exposed to very graphic details about the traumatic event in question, which.

HOW DO WE MEASURE VICARIOUS TRAUMA?

Respondents rate how often they have experienced each of the items in the past seven days. Another revised version of the CFST—the Compassion Fatigue Scale-Revised (CFS-R)—was developed by Gentry, Baranowsky, and Dunning in 2002. In the initial report of the measure, test-retest reliability was adequate (0.87 for the intrusion) . subscale and 0.79 for the avoidance subscale); and data support.

An updated report on the psychometric properties of the original IES was published in 2002 by Sundin and Horowitz. The psychometric properties of the STSS (Bride et al., 2004) support its use for assessing symptoms of vicarious trauma among mental health professionals. research.

HOW CAN WE RESCUE OURSELVES FROM VICARIOUS TRAUMA?

Efforts have been made in the conceptual literature to identify self-care strategies that may be useful in mitigating the effects of vicarious traumatization. Pearlman and Saakvitne (1995) conceptualize the changes in the therapist's inner world that occur as a result of vicarious traumatization through the lens. The sudden and far-reaching nature of disasters can mean that achieving in-the-moment predictability can be particularly challenging for disaster relief workers.

In the face of repeated exposures to clients' trauma narratives, therapists may be confronted with the real limitations of their ability to be helpful. To his surprise, he found himself enjoying the feel of the soil between his fingers and the subtle changes in the appearance of the garden from week to week.

WHAT CAN ORGANIZATIONS DO TO ADDRESS VICARIOUS TRAUMA IN

In early 2013, an initiative addressing the promotion of mental health and the prevention of psychological harm in the workplace was launched in Toronto, Canada. Mandatory inclusion of self-care education and training for mental health providers at every disaster preparedness event is a strategy that can prevent the disruption of the security domain in VT. Materials included a description of self-care and employee health as an extension of the Community Mental Health Center's core values of health and wellness for all.

"Disaster preparedness" in the pre-disaster phase includes understanding the role of the mental health practitioner, scope of practice in the disaster environment, and awareness of the limits of one's training and knowledge before engaging in disaster response (Kantor & Beckert, 2011). In the process of learning about VT, there is an awareness of personal strengths and vulnerabilities, which is essential for the occupational health and safety of mental health providers against any disaster.

WHAT RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE ON VICARIOUS TRAUMA?

The Vicarious Trauma Institute offers individualized training and educational presentations on vicarious traumatization and compassion fatigue to help professionals and others experiencing vicarious trauma. Green Cross Academy of Traumatology (GCAT) is non-profit international humanitarian organization, including specialists in trauma and compassion fatigue treatment. GCAT offers Compassion Fatigue Educator (CFE) certification for those interested in specialized training in the investigation and prevention of compassion fatigue.

Founded by Patricia Smith, this website offers a variety of media related to compassion fatigue prevention. Self-Care Academy offers advice, training and online media for the prevention and treatment of compassion fatigue.
