English Communication

̶ Course Syllabus —

In this course, you will:

1. Review last semesterʼs communication strategies and learn new ones. These will allow you to control the flow of a

conversation, and to communicate more naturally.

2. Express your own opinions clearly, and respond to the opinions of others.

3. Use descriptions to smoothly continue a conversation, even when you do not know the best word or phrase.

4. Improve your fluency and confidence until you can have an enjoyable, relaxed 10-minute conversation on various topics.

Office: School of Humanities & Social Sciences – Building 1, Room 624 Office HR: Wednesdays, 1:30 – 2:30 P.M. or by appointment.

Textbook: None. However, we will have many handouts. Bring them to class every week.

Four Rules:

  Write a check

in the box when you have understood each rule.

☐ Letʼs speak 100% English in the classroom.

If you hear someone speaking in Japanese, ask him or her a question in English.

Come to class on time every week, and bring your folder with handouts, homework, and dictionary.

If you are absent more than four (4) times, you automatically fail the course. 

Absent = 1

Late =

No handouts =

No homework =

NOTE: Class begins when the chime rings and I close the door. If you arrive after that you will be marked late. If you come in more than 15 minutes late, you will be marked absent.

☐ Do your homework on time.

Late homework will lose 50% of the points.

Bring late HW to my office within one week; otherwise you will be given 0 points.

☐ Put your cell phone away.

Set it to “silent mode” and put it in your bag. Donʼt look at or touch it during class.
