Education centered on the graduate school education and research
Today, industry favors the recruitment of students who have advanced degrees rather than graduates with only bachelor's degrees. Reflecting these needs, Toyohashi University of Technology (Toyohashi Tech) has a higher enrollment limit for master's courses than for undergraduates. Therefore, all graduates with the appropriate ability can enroll on a master's course. Furthermore, the makeup of the academic staff at Toyohashi Tech is weighted towards postgraduate education, and the ratio of students to each instructor is lower than in other universities. Thus, students are able to study in a balanced and fulfilling education environment.
New doctoral course programs
Advanced research projects are undertaken to meet the needs of industry and society in general, based on innovative inter- disciplinary doctoral course programs that integrate a wide range of specialist areas.
Research collaboration with technical colleges
By promoting collaborative research with researchers at technical colleges, new students enrolling at Toyohashi Tech are able to continue research and related education as part of an well-organized educational system that is aligned with their curricula at the technical college from day one of joining
Toyohashi Tech.
Accepting students from a wide range of backgrounds
Graduates from regular high schools are accepted as freshmen, while graduates from technical colleges enroll as third years into senior level courses. Many students are accepted based on recommendations from their high schools.Toyohashi Tech targeted and versatile curricula are designed to cater for the needs of students from a wide range of backgrounds.
Practical training in the curriculum
Long term industrial training is provided for 4th year students prior to their enrollment in graduate school programs. This industrial internship gives students firsthand experience of the industrial applications of the subjects that they study at university, which can help them to understand the meaning of their research during their master's course.
Unique spiral-up based program
Toyohashi Tech's so-called 'spiral-up curriculum' was devised to address the individual needs of our undergraduate and graduate students as they progress in their studies. That is, students who have completed basic and technical studies in their freshman and sophomore courses or at technical colleges are given the opportunity to take 'order made' courses to complement their studies to-date. In this manner, courses covering basic subjects as well as highly specialized areas give students a deeper

Active international exchanges
Toyohashi Tech has a wide range of international exchange activities with partner universities and collaborative research institutes overseas. Currently, more than 200 international students (including regular students and research students) are enrolled at Toyohashi Tech. The International Cooperation Center for Engineering Education Development is at the heart of managing these activities.
Multiple industry-academia-government cooperation and collaboration with regional societies
Toyohashi Tech actively encourages industry-academia- government projects, such as collaborative research and research funded by the private sector, and promoting cooperative enterprise with local government. Furthermore, as an 'Open University', Toyohashi Tech also offers special re- education projects for people in the working society.
Cutting edge research
Toyohashi Tech's "Frontiers of Intelligent Sensing" project was accepted by MEXT as a program for a global COE program in 2007. Toyohashi Tech operates a unique LSI factory for the design and fabrication of LSI micro-electronics that are integrated into a wide range of sensors. Utilizing its unique environment for research and development, Toyohashi Tech
established a research and development base for "intelligent sensing" that combines advanced "intelligence" including bio- sensing, medical diagnostics, environment monitoring, and agriculture. In addition, Toyohashi Tech aims to educate leading "Sensing Architects" with an international perspective to explore technology of the future.
