Front page (course title, topic of the paper, student’s name and number, date of submission)
Table of contents Introduction
The main text* organized in sections (please don’t forget the in-text citations)
Conclusion Notes (if any) References
* Tables and figures may be inserted inside the text, or attached at the end of the paper.
5. Contents: the paper should contain a thesis statement and students should try to support it by using various arguments and empirical evidence (statistical data, opinion polls, case studies, etc.).
The thesis statement(問題提起)could be an assertion(主張)or a hypothesis
(仮説)
, but not a statement of fact or an observation (事実確
3
認、観察). For example, "Japanese farmers use many chemicals" is an
observation, but "Japanese consumers are being poisoned through their daily food because of the use of chemicals by farmers" is a thesis statement.Always try to answer not just the question "What happened?" but also
“Why did it happen?”, “What kind of problems have occurred as a result?”,
“How should we deal with those problems?”.
6. No plagiarism. When you use articles, books or any other text (including any text on the Internet) written by someone else, please always cite your source. Please use (a) in-text citations, (b) notes in the bottom of each page, and (c) references at the end. Don’t use “copy and paste” because this will automatically lead to failing the course.
How to cite a source?
If, for example, you have used a part from p. 57 of Douglass North’s 1990 book, please write inside the text (North, 1990, p. 57) and in the references at the end: North, D., Institutions, Institutional Change and Economic Performance, Cambridge University Press, 1990.
In the case of an article posted on the Internet, please write the title of the article in brackets inside the text and also write in the references the title of the article, the web site address (for instance, http://www.europa.eu.int/index_en.htm) and the date of access (accessed on, for instance, 16 June 2011).
7. Paper presentation
(期末発表 )
: each student should also make a presentation in English of his/her progress on the term paper on a prescribed date during the semester (in July). Students who are not confident to present in English can try using both Japanese and English. Please distribute to the other students copies of your Power point slides (or the
