“I might find a fortune teller in a market or an amusement park.”

Let’s read question number 2.

What questions do people usually ask fortune-tellers?

“People usually ask fortune tellers about jobs and relationships.”

Let’s read question number 3.

Can fortune-tellers really say what will happen in the future?

“I think fortune tellers cannot really say what will happen in the future.” / “I think fortune tellers can really say what will happen in the future.”

Step 2: Pre-reading Questions Discussions (10 min)

 We have 10 minutes to do this activity.

Let’s read question number 1.

-

You may use these sentence patterns to guide you in making your answers:

Important Steps

(8)

33

Step 3: Interactive Reading (25 min)

• The first paragraph talks

about three kinds of fortune tellers: the priests who

predicted upcoming events…, the Malay bomohs who use candles…, and the Roma or Gypsies who read Tarot cards…

• It reminds me of my friend and her mother who went to a fortune teller to ask

whether she (my friend) and her boyfriend have a

compatible character.

• I think that fortune telling should not be taken seriously because nobody knows what will happen in the future.

• What do you think about my opinion?

Paragraph 1

(9)

34

• The second paragraph talks about one kind of fortune telling which is called divination. It is performed by a diviner who sees the future through contact with spirits or gods.

• It reminds me of the

movie “Ghost” where one of the characters can see and talk to spirits.

• What do you think about diviners? Do you think that they can really

contact spirits or gods to tell them about the

future?

Step 3: Interactive Reading (25 min)

Paragraph 2

(10)

35

Step 3: Interactive Reading (25 min)

• The third paragraph explains about another kind of

fortune telling which is only done for entertainment or fun. The customer and the fortune teller do not take the prediction seriously. You can have it in a carnival or a night club.

• It reminds me of another movie that I saw where one couple found a booth with a fortune teller in it and asked their fortune. But the fortune teller said that they only

have 100 days to stay together, but if they stay

together longer both of them will die.

• I think it is really funny. But some people can take it seriously.

• What do you think about it?

Paragraph 3

(11)

36

• The fourth paragraph talks about a third kind of fortune telling – a belief in

astrological sign. It is a system of predicting one’s future by studying the position of the stars and

planets. Libra and Taurus are examples of signs in

astrology, and a horoscope is an example of a short

prediction that goes with it.

You can see a horoscope in newspapers or magazines.

• When I was in high school I used to check my horoscope everyday just for fun.

• I think it makes me excited about my day.

• Do you know about horoscope?

Step 3: Interactive Reading (25 min)

Paragraph 4

(12)

37

Step 3: Interactive Reading (25 min)

• The fifth paragraph states

that fortune telling is still alive today because people think non-rationally sometimes. It means that we sometimes do not find observable causes for what we experience. For

example, some people

believe in spirits which cannot be seen.

• I remember my Aunt who told me about her dream. She said that she saw her dead

brother and father lying down on her bed. She immediately believed that they were

telling her something. So she went to their tombs to visit and pray for them.

• Do you have any similar experiences?

Paragraph 5

(13)

38

Step 3: Interactive Reading (25 min)

• The sixth paragraph states that it is rational to think that the cat knocked the glass over than a spirit knocking the

glass over because the cat is more closely tied to things that we can see. However, if many people witnessed that the glass was knocked over by an angry spirit, that scene will be rational, too.

• I read some stories about people who study about

spirits and try to record their studies to make people

believe that spirits exist, but until now many people do not take these studies seriously.

• What do you think about it?

Do you believe in spirits?

Paragraph 6

(14)

39

• The last paragraph states that fortune tellers use observable objects such as cards, sticks, crystal balls or tea leaves to make the process of fortune telling observable. However, it is still non-rational because there is no observable connection between the prediction and the life of the customer, for instance in palm reading a fortune teller can say that the line on the palm of the customer means long life, but again the line on the palm has no relationship with how long he will live.

• In my opinion, fortune telling should not be taken seriously and should remain just for fun.

• What do you think?

Step 3: Interactive Reading (25 min)

Paragraph 7

Step 4: Answering of Reading Exercises (10 min)

Possible Answers to the Pre-reading Questions

• 1. I can find fortune tellers in a market.

• 2. People usually ask them about love or jobs.

• 3. I think some fortune tellers can predict the future.

2. Answers to the following:

1. Main Points of the Story

This story is about telling fortune. It talks about three types of telling fortune: divination, telling fortune for fun, and astrology. It also mentions different kinds of people who have their own ways of predicting the future: priests use internal organs of chickens, Malay bomohs use candles, leaves, and a customer’s personal possession, and Roma or Gypsies use tarot cards, crystal balls and people’s palms.

According to this story, telling fortune is still alive today because modern humans are willing to think non-rationally sometimes. Even though fortune tellers connect their predictions to observable objects, there is still no proof of the connection between the observable objects that fortune tellers use to their customer’s future.
