Read! In the name of the Lord and Cherisher, Who created - Created man out of a (mere) clot of

congealed blood; Proclaim! And the Lord is Most Bountiful, - He Who taught (the use of) the pen -

Taught man that which he knew not.

FOREWORD

The title In the Centre was chosen for its literal and figurative meaning. First, it refers to one’s physical presence in the Sarawak Islamic Information Centre whilst the second refers to one taking a moderate path.

The Centre since its inception has always taken a moderate approach to all its programs and activities. Moderation does not equate to mediocrity. Moderate here refers to being inclusive and encompassing.

With knowledge as its focus, the book highlights the Centre’s roles and functions, programs, and activities from its opening in 2008 till now. More importantly, the book attempts to record the people that shape and contribute to the Centre’s growth and development. Nevertheless, this book would not do justice to all of their sweat and tears. May ALLAH reward them abundantly, Insya-ALLAH.

The team of writers, led by Associate Prof. Dr Dayang Affizzah Awang Marikan, Deputy Dean of Research and Commercialization, Faculty of Economics and Business UNIMAS, were appointed for this project to provide objective and holistic perspectives of the Centre.

We hope that this book would provide a glimpse of what the Centre has accomplished all these years. And it is also our hope that this book could spur fresh ideas, new approaches, and constant support as it moves to its next higher level of greatness. Insya-ALLAH.

I consider the Islamic Information Centre as one of our efforts to show respect to other religions, high tolerance values that will improve our

relationship with each other as Sarawakian and Malaysian.

I wish the Centre could acquire as much information as possible.

I also wish peoples of Sarawak could work together to contribute towards a united and harmonious Sarawak.

YANG DI-PERTUA MAJLIS ISLAM SARAWAK

Describe SIIC in three words. How different would it be for SIIC if it were in

West Malaysia?

What is your opinion on that?

How is SIIC different from other Islamic agencies?

There’s an array of words to choose from to define SIIC and I cannot select only three words. If I must choose only three, I would describe SIIC as embodiment of Soul, Knowledge and Unity distinct from the organization itself.

‘Bhineka Tunggal Ika’ is an Indonesian slogan loosely translated into Unity in Diversity. To achieve a peaceful and harmonious community, regardless of Sarawak or West Malaysia, we must respect each other’s differences and celebrate our similarities. TYT Pehin Sri Tun Taib Mahmud had once said, “If you are a Muslim, be a good Muslim.

If you are a Christian, be a good Christian and if you are a Buddhist, be a good Buddhist.”

He emphasised the value of always being a better person regardless of religion. This is the pre- requisite trait that paves the way to achieve a harmonious community. Thus, the slogan Unity in Diversity indicates that we must be united even though we are of different races, religions, or political backgrounds. Hence, it is also SIIC’s role to promote unity and become the symbol of unity relevant to all. However, Unity must be practiced, or aptly coined as “Practicing what we preach.”

SIIC is where everyone from many different walks of life congregates through its architecture and where people are free to enjoy the beauty of Islam.

Upon entering SIIC, one could feel the serenity, connectedness, and a sense of belonging towards the community. We could also reach out to the masses at large and be able to enhance ourselves. SIIC is not a public relations agency and a centre to disseminate information but a knowledge hub for Islamic info. Finally, it is a platform for everyone to gain beneficial understanding, regardless of ethnicities and religion, while also preserving the centre for the future generation of Sarawakians to come, in its endeavour to instill and be in line with maintaining harmony, unity, and ensuring a knowledgeable generation.

A GLIMPSE OF SIIC WITH DATU HAJI MISNU HAJI TAHA

For SIIC to be sustainable for the future generations of Sarawak, visionary leadership is very crucial indeed. For instance, a leader needs to consider the UMMAH, the term quality of education, in successfully balancing both the temporal knowledge and the knowledge we need in the Hereafter. This is to produce charismatic and visionary future leaders of Sarawak that will maneuver Sarawak towards sustainable development, in line with the country’s vision and catering to the needs of the UMMAH. Most importantly, SIIC must be relevant at all times.

As the world becomes more digitalized, SIIC must embrace the changes and swiftly adapt to stay relevant. Digital technology can be disruptive and revolutionary. The SIIC can leverage it and become the catalyst needed to supplement the sustainable development of Sarawak.

SIIC must be relevant at all time to become

an institution with a soul.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF SARAWAK ISLAMIC INFORMATION CENTRE

DIALOGUE WITH HAJAH ZABARIAH HAJI MATALI One word to describe SIIC.

What would you say is the biggest accomplishment of SIIC?

If I can have one word to describe our Centre, I would like to have the word trailblazer.   Trailblazer because it sets the momentum, it sets people to follow. We lead in all aspects of things. So I think SIIC is a trailblazer.

I cannot say that we have one or two accomplishments. I could proudly say that we have in fact accomplished more than that.

First, we are the first centre to conduct the Friday sermon in English. We also are the first centre to have the Friday sermon in other languages such as Mandarin, Arabic, Iban and Bidayuh. And then the first centre to reach out to other faiths or religious organisations in our society. The first centre to organize events or programs with other faiths or leaders of other faiths apart from organizing events or programs that bring together Muslims.

For me, the biggest accomplishment is being able to reach out to various sectors of society, be it Muslims, other faiths, youth, women, the media, and even minority Muslims outside of our country through our activities and programs. In summary, we are fulfilling the objectives and aspirations of why our Centre was set up.

Most importantly is what we do now is not only

HERE but for the HEREAFTER.
