Dato’ Dr. Mahani Zainal Abidin:
Publications and Writing
Compiled by Susan Teoh
Information Services, ISIS Malaysia
Dato’ Dr. Mahani Zainal Abidin was a well-known economist and a respected academic.
During her thirty years in public service as professor, senior policy-maker, government advisor, and finally, as chief executive of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia, Malaysia’s leading think tank, she made many contributions both in person and in written word, on a wide range of economic issues. She was often invited to present papers and keynote addresses as speaker or panelist at conferences, seminars and other national and international forums. She addressed scholars, the business fraternity, professional gatherings, students, and civil society meetings. She was sought after by the media, and featured frequently on television and the radio.
This bibliographic listing of her life’s work truly reflects her devotion to advancing various aspects of Economics, with particular focus on developmental economics, finance and international trade. The listing is divided into two parts.
Part I is a compilation of Dato’ Dr. Mahani’s published works. This is based on a version published in ISIS Focus, Issue No. 7 July 2013, entries are included here by kind permission of ISIS Malaysia. A listing of newspaper articles has been added.
Part II is a compilation of unpublished works and other personal contributions, and comprises conference papers, titles of talks and lectures; unpublished working papers and reports submitted to various committees and agencies; and any other works that were not published for one reason or another.
Sources: Library catalogues of ISIS Malaysia and the University of Malaya were searched extensively. Annual Reports of the University of Malaya before 1997, which incorporated details of staff publications by department, were searched. Lists of publications in various curriculum vitae were an important source. It should be noted that citations of talks and speeches begin only in 2007. These were recorded by Dato’ Dr. Mahani’s secretary when she took office at ISIS Malaysia. Despite all efforts, it is expected that this compilation is not one hundred per cent complete.
