A Study on Developing Economies in Asia
This study aims to examine the correlations between tax avoidance and its determinants among government-linked companies (GLCs) in Bursa Malaysia from 2014 to 2019. While GLCs play a very important role in the economic and social development of Malaysia, GLCs may be associated with avoidance activities. taxes. The benefits to GLCs outweigh the associated costs of tax avoidance and extracting rents from potential managers is the only viable cost of tax avoidance, while GLCs benefit from higher cash flows avoided under taxation.
Therefore, this study will investigate the level of tax evasion and its possible determinants for GLCs to be involved in tax evasion activities. This study used the book tax difference (BTD) as a proxy for tax avoidance, with higher BTD indicating greater tax avoidance. The findings show that leverage, market-to-book ratio, firm age and firm political affiliation are significantly related to tax avoidance among GLCs in Bursa Malaysia.
