INTRODUCTION

Ministry of Health Malaysia seen 42% jump in hospital admissions of Covid-19 patients since February 2022.

Meanwhile, recommendations are expanding nationwide for booster dose of Covid-19 vaccine to restore vaccine effectiveness as study shown protection against Covid-19 infection wanes 3 to 5 months after primary immunisation. The booster program was launched by Ministry of Health on 13th October 2021 and in Kerian district, those who have completed two doses of vaccination were given booster dose starting 15 October 2021.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of booster vaccination in preventing hospital admission due to Covid-19 infection.

METHODOLOGY

A retrospective cohort study was conducted by analyzing the data from Kerian Health District Office Covid-19 cases line listing between November 2021 until March 2022 to assess Covid-19 vaccine effectiveness of two and three doses (booster) in preventing hospital admission due to Covid-19 infection. All confirmed Covid-19 cases in Kerian district that has been hospitalized due to Covid-19 infection was included in this study while exclusions criteria for this study were patient who refused vaccination, patient under 18 years old and received single dose of Covid-19 vaccination (Pfizer, Astra Zeneca or Sinovac) during the study period. Data entry and statistical analysis were performed using Microsoft Excel 2017.

RESULTS

The total (N) of 460 patients were infected with COVID-19 during the period of study. From 460 patients, only 104 patients (22.6%) who received booster dose were admitted to hospital for further treatment as compared to 356 patients (77.4%) who completed two primary doses of Covid-19 vaccine.

CONCLUSION

Booster vaccination helps in reducing the risk of hospitalization 3 times lower compared with person who only completed two doses of primary vaccines without a booster dose in Kerian district. Booster dose helps in reducing the numbers of patients hospitalized due to Covid-19 infection.
