Social participation refers to “the engagement of older people in recreation, socialization, and cultural, educational and spiritual activities”. The benefits of remaining socially active are many folds and well documented. In fact, not only social capital of healthy seniors enhances will facilitate the success of younger generations, it also indirectly increases improve the capacity for later life care.

Methods

A significant number of senior older people for participation in the health screening were recruited. Through both invitations from UM and the RA's network, following the health screening event, a total of 29 seniors older persons were selected to attended the focus group meeting subsequent to health screening. The group was divided into English and Mandarin speaking groups. The sessions were both audio and video recorded with the consent of participants. A focus group interview was used to collect data from 10(into two groups) register nurses who work with older person in the community setting. Non probability, purposive sampling were used to recruit participants.

Result

The data were collated and thematically code, analyse and then present. Data were categorised into themes as they emerged. Four main themes derived for facilitators, these were: 1) socio- environmental, 2) health, 3) interpersonal, 4) personal and 5) cultural

and six main theme for berries, 1) socio-environmental, 2) health, 3) economic, 4) interpersonal, 5) personal and 6) cultural

Conclusion

Social participation among older person is affected by socialisation among the older community.

Sharing same cultural and religious practice may enhance social connection among the older person. Health care provider should plan short term strategies to enhance participation in communities and should consider long term plan to empower them.
