Institute-HEARS as the beneficiary of Petronita’s Orchid Run & Ride
Institute-HEARS was one of the beneficiaries of Petronita KL's Orchid Run & Ride 2016. On 20th of July 2017, PETRONITA organized a small get together to celebrate some of the recipients of the funding whom are UKM CI Program patients. A total of 32 UKM patients from all over the country benefited from last year's RM60,000 donation, in the form of hearing aids, assistive listening devices and cochlear implant accessories. More details here.
This year, Institute-HEARS is once again the beneficiary for Petronita’s Orchid Run & Ride 2017. We received a
generous RM100,000 donation; we opened a booth and conducted a hearing screening on event day and one of our UKM CI recipient, Kai Xin, performed rhythmic gymrama on stage. It is hoped that more individuals with hearing
impairment will benefit from this funding. More about the event online.

The Making of…
“Transforming Lives with Hearing” Video
UKM Cochlear Implant Recipients’ Profile:
The UKM Cochlear Implant (CI) Program is the pioneer for habilitation program for deaf children in Malaysia since 1995. To date, more than 400 patients have received benefits from the program. The UKM CI Program serves as a platform for children to learn to listen, speak and develop language like their normal hearing peers, that would then enable them to enroll into mainstream schools. In fact, a local study looking at the long term outcomes of the UKM paediatric implantees reported that more than half of the implantees (58.5%) are enrolled in mainstream school, using oral spoken language as their mode of communication (Goh et al., 2017).
Goh, B. S., Fadzilah, N., Abdullah, A., Othman, B. F., & Umat, C. (2017). Long-term outcomes of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Cochlear Implant Program among Pediatric Implantees. Internasional Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology, 105,27-32.
Institute-HEARS manages the UKM CI Program and we are proud to note that more patients are being intervened early, and receiving the required habilitation. Yet, more work needs to be done where experts and community alike need to come together to help close the gap between hearing impaired children and normal hearing children.
One such initiative is a collaboration with Cochlear Ltd in producing a video featuring recipients of the UKM CI Program (their profiles on the side).
The team brainstormed the script and filmed in just under two days. Thank you Cochlear Ltd for the continuous support in “Transforming Lives with Hearing”.

Amos Sum, 3
Implanted at 2.5 years old;
Parents’ hopes: “I hope Amos can live a fulfilling
life, accepted by the society and get equal
opportunities in education and employment without
discrimination and labels”.
Mohamad Farzan, 7
Implanted at 3 years old;
Parents: “Before the implant he could only say ‘hi’ and ‘bye’. After switch on his speech and language
are developing rapidly. He is now studying in a mainstream school”.
Tee Le Peng, 22
Implanted at 2.5 years old, currently a University student;
“Being deaf is a challenge but also a privilege. Being deaf exposes us to
challenges and learning opportunities that are not available for others. To go far, reach out! You
are never alone!”
Lavinsh, 3
Implanted at 2 years old;
Parents’ advice to others:
“Seek professional advice quickly as early intervention
is important. Do some research and learning on
your own as well, talk to fellow parents to learn and
share. Work closely with therapist and audiologist – they are very supportive”.

About Institute-HEARS
Established in 2013 to close the gap between individuals with hearing loss and their normal hearing peers. We achieve this through multifaceted platforms which include fundamental and applied research related to hearing and hearing loss, clinical services, upskilling of professionals involved in the management of hearing impaired individuals and improving hearing loss awareness among professionals and the general public.
We are a group /team of dedicated and passionate professionals (audiologists, speech-language therapists, otologic surgeon, linguist, special educationist, counsellor, pediatrician, researcher) of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Our clinical services are the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist clinic, audiology, speech- language therapy, counselling sessions, and a more specialized CI clinic that has been running since 1995.
Thousands of patients are currently receiving treatment from UKM.
All patients with hearing loss in UKM are under the care of a
transdisciplinary team who provide a family-centered /patient-
centered care. This distinguishes Institute-HEARS from other
hearing loss clinics /programs in Malaysia. Institute-HEARS also has
the biggest pool of experts from various background who work
synergistically in the management of hearing loss. By empowering
individuals with hearing loss to live and function in the mainstream
society, we are maximizing their full potentials.
