Programme Curriculum Structure (by semester)

Students are required to undergo the ALAM Competency Assessment Scheme (ACAS) for three weeks before embarking for the practical training. After the students complete ACAS, the training department will provide the students with a Training Record Book (TARB) before they join the ship. Students should come to ALAM for their TARB book review: MIDTERM REVIEW (6 months shipboard practical training) and FINAL REVIEW (after completion of 12 months sea time).

The training department will plan for their MOCK ORAL PREPARATORY (3 WEEKS) and SCOTTISH ORAL ASSESSMENT (2 WEEKS) before proceeding to STCW Modular courses and also MARDEP ORAL.

Shipboard Practical Training II This shipboard practical training aims to use the Shipboard Training and Assessment Record Book (TARB) to demonstrate competence to perform the functions in accordance with the STCW Code. The subject aims to meet the sub-requirements of Part A, Chapter II, Table A-II/1 of the Standard Training and Certification of Watchkeepers and Seafarers (STCW) Convention 1978 and 2010 changes in the application of leadership and teamwork skills for aspiring deck officers prior to the issue of a certificate of competency as guards.

Programme Courses Synopsis

Collision Regulations To refresh knowledge of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972, as amended (COLREG'72). The module helps students identify lights, shapes and sound signals used at sea. The subject will be used for training in recognizing lights and shapes, using 'rule-of-the-road' models or magnetic boards.

Students should be able to recognize the vessel type, aspect and any special meaning of the signals and, given that the compass bearing does not change appreciably, indicate what action, if any, they would take and what signals should be given . To provide students with an understanding of standard algebraic manipulations that lead to the formulation and solution of algebraic equations. The module will also help develop the required competence of mathematical skills to perform calculations in the field of navigation, cargo work, ship stability, chart work and other areas of their professional work.

The purpose of the module is to fully complete the partial requirements in Part A, Chapter II, Table A-II/1 of the Standard Convention for Training and Certification of Watchmen and Seafarers (STCW) 1978 and 2010. Changes in the use of IMO -standard phrases and usage for maritime communication English in written and oral form for prior issuance of a certificate of competence as a watchkeeper by aspiring deck officers. This topic provides an understanding of the change in stability when the ship is rolling at a large angle at sea, heeling while the ship is making a wide course change, impaired stability, stresses experienced by the ship at sea, transport requirements of bulk grain and the change in stability when the ship has high freeboard area. Cargo handling and storage This course provides an understanding of the theoretical and operational knowledge of the handling and care of various seaborne cargoes. Master of Business Management of Ships This course provides an understanding of various maritime conventions, annexes and legislation.

Maritime + COLREGs This course enables students to acquire the knowledge and skills to manage a ship safely and effectively. This course provides an understanding of the principles of shipbuilding and the rules and regulations associated with ship design and construction.

The module helps to develop the required competence for safe navigation of the vessel in various situations. The ocean navigation course provides an understanding of the basic knowledge and skills in ship positioning planning. The Navigation Aids course provides an understanding of the basic knowledge and skills for the safe use of ships. Navigational aids for safe navigation, efficient control and effective management of the ship.

This subject provides students with the knowledge and understanding of the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea 1972 (IRPC). The module will help develop the required competence for the safe navigation of ships and provide an understanding of navigation risks and associated issues. with actions taken at close range and in limited visibility. This topic provides insight into the principles and applications of magnetism on board steel ships, magnetic and gyro compasses, their errors and corrections. Engineering and Control Systems This course provides insight into the basic knowledge and principles of Engineering and Control Systems.

This topic discusses the theoretical and operational knowledge of transverse and longitudinal stability, including the practical application of its calculation on board a ship. This course provides students with the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge related to Meteorology so that they can take/make informed decisions about the movement of the ship (planning the passage taking into account the weather). This course was commissioned by MQA, where the student would learn about the meaning of professional and work ethics from the perspective of different religions, the application of ethical values ​​in professional behavior, the different types of ethical and unethical problems in management, the relationship between the law. and the moral standard, civil service ethics functions and ethical issues related to legal, engineering, business, information fields.
