OBJECTIVES
1. To present the state of international and local efforts in sustainable living in the urban areas.
2. To discuss issues of the changing urbanization process and sustainable living.
3. To develop a collaboration for future research in urbanization and sustainability.
INTRODUCTION
The changing processes of urbanization have attracted many researchers to come to grasp and explain the phenomena. The attempts came from
a variety of disciplines as well as many inter-disciplinary efforts. Over the years, these studies have not only explained urbanization, they have also, in many ways, shaped future urbanization. While the various research efforts have provided various glimpses at the different possible faces of urbanization, their very discussions have also been the basis of planning efforts that design the further growth of the cities
The symposium brings together researchers that have looked at various aspects of urbanization, presenting their experiences and reflections on the urbanization process from different parts of the world. The common goal is to ask what have been achieved throughout the years and have these articulations provided a better insight into the understanding of the city and its processes. Issues, questions, approaches and methodologies that have framed the various researches are discussed to explain the resulting knowledge corpus on the various components of cities, and the urbanization process. Attempts from thick descriptions to complexity modeling, grounded through fieldworks in various cities have all contributed to our current perception of the city, and from these, the question,
‘what’s next?’, arises.
This symposium extends from several roundtable dialogues that were organized by the Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI) at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia for the past two years.
The focus of these roundtables have been to address the sustainability and livability of cities, especially that within Malaysia and Southeast Asia, with comparative lessons from other parts of the world. While the previous roundtables emphasize the modeling and complexity of researching urbanization, this symposium takes a ‘bigger picture’
approach, questioning the meaning of the various research efforts in light of changing urbanization.
