Mosti readies action plan to strengthen local EV industry

b y A N I S H A Z I M

THE Ministry of Science, Techno- logy and Innovation (Mosti) has prepared an action plan to strengthen the local electric vehicle (EV) industry, in line with the national mobility sustainability agenda.

Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba said the ministry — through NanoMalaysia Bhd as the imple- menting agency — will emphasise balanced economic development and sustainable mobility.

"An action plan has been prepared that focuses on local industries through the provision of research and development grants especially local EV-based industries and enterprises.

"This important aspect can drive economic growth and job creation in line with the aspiration to make Malaysia a high-tech and high- income country by 2030," stated Dr Adham in a statement yesterday.

In order to strengthen the EV

technology in Malaysia, Mosti has adopted a whole nation approach to increase acceptance of EV tech- nology and subsequently achieved the goa l of positioning Malaysia as one of the leading exporters of EV components in the Asean region.

The collaboration also involved the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Ministry of Trans- port, Ministry of Environment and Water, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, institutions of higher learning, start-ups as well as small and medium enterprises.

Besides, the Enabling Mobility Electrification for Green Economy p r o g r a m m e by NanoMalaysia has received the strategic research fund under the Malaysia Grand Challenge.

"The p r o g r a m m e a i m s to improve the development blocks of EV technology through the Nano- Technology Commercialisation Programme in an effort to improve energy storage and management systems, the Internet of Nano-

Things and the development of charging stations (off-grid green charging stations), and develop EV prototypes as an industry- acceptable validation platform,"

Mosti said.

Other initiatives also include the rapid electric vehicles innovation validation ecosystem to focus

on converting normal engines to electric engines.

"Mosti is confident that public acceptance of EVs will increase in the short term as energy-efficient EVs require only a simple charging infrastructure involving battery exchange systems," it added.

It also noted that EV technology

has great potential for public trans- port and delivery services by 2030.

Based on the 10-10 Science, Technology, Innovation and Eco- nomy framework which is an initiative that supports the National Science, Technology and Inno- vation Policy 2021-2030, EV aspi- rations also take account to the National Automotive Policy 2020, National Transport Policy 2019- 2030 and the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint 2021-2030.

Dr Adham further said that Mosti has also taken the first step by submitting the NanoMalaysia Energy Storage Technology Initiative Programme in the 12th Malaysia Plan.

"This programme emphasises the development and commerciali- sation of energy storage systems for electrical mobility use, including batteries, ultra-capacitors, hydro- gen and reactor storage, energy management systems and battery recycling, which will be launched in the future," he said.
