FAQ ON TETANUS PROPHYLAXIS INJECTION
Q 1: What is the time frame to give antitetanus injection after the infection/wound has occur?
A 1: It is important to ascertain the number of doses of tetanus toxoid previously given and the interval since the last dose. Tetanus prophylaxis is required as soon as possible for patients who did not receive complete course of tetanus immunization (3 jabs) or in patients who last received their tetanus booster more than 10 years ago.
Below is the summary of tetanus prophylaxis.
Q 2 : How is the vaccination schedule like?
A 2 : A series of 3 doses of 0.5ml tetanus toxoid elicits protection in 90% vaccines. Primary vaccination provides protection at least 10 years. In children, primary immunization is given at age 2,4,6 and 15 to 18 months but the first dose can be administered as soon as 6 weeks. In children >7 years old &
adult who have NOT been immunized before, the 3 doses are administered IM initially. The first two doses are given 1-2 months a part, and the third dose is given 6-12 months after the second dose.
Q 3 : When do booster doses be given?
A 3 : Booster doses are recommended every 10 years, unless there is a contraindication to diphtheria toxoid.
