Figure 6 shows the variation in monthly purse seiner catch rates at one of the landing centers on the west coast. On the east coast, most purse seines operate around FAD areas more than 20 nm offshore. Small pelagics caught with seine nets in west coast waters, mainly Euthynnus affinis, Thannus tonggol, Decapterus spp., Rastrelliger kanagurta.

However, in the waters of the west coast, Decapterus maruadsi appeared to be the most important and common species.

INTRODUCTION

FISHERIES AND BIOLOGY

Although these data are preliminary, variations in monthly total catch and CPUE for the two years may indicate the seasonality of the species. Landings of the two species of Auxis were not separated in the fishing statistics report. Landings of kawakawa are generally higher in shallow water than in deep water fishing grounds (Yesaki e t al, 1991).

The growth and mortality parameters of the round scad species in the Philippines are given in Table 12.

OCEANOGRAPHIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL PARAMETERS RELATED TO MARINE FISHERIES

The smallest mature and spent female Kawakawa found during the study were 40, 45 and 40 cm, respectively (Wade 1950b). Bunag (1956) measured the egg diameters of 30 fish (to determine maturity) and related egg development to different stages of maturity. Bunag (1956) concluded from the polymodal distribution of egg diameters that kawakawa spawned more than once during a spawning season, but was unable to determine spawning frequency.

The majority of landings from 1989 to 1991 consisted of small mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta) and selar (Selar mate and Selar melanoptera). On the other hand, trawlers are not affected and the rest of the pelagic landings for 1994 were contributed by the artisanal sector. Figure 3 shows the density distribution of small pelagics on the Brunei continental shelf.

These values ​​of Y/B indicate an overall easy exploitation of the pelagic resources in the onshelf area.

Appendix Table 4 shows the total marine fisheries production by species group in the South China Sea Area (Jambi, South Sumatra and West Kalimantan Provinces) for 11-year periods. The results of the reassessment of marine fisheries potential in the South China Sea Area are shown in Table 2 (Venema, 1995). Appendix Table 1: Development of some main gears used in the South China Sea area, Year Payang Beach.

Neritic tuna is the most economically important pelagic fish in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. During the pre-monsoon season period (March-May) R/V "CHULABHORN" made cruises to conduct tuna purse seine survey using FADs moored in the Andaman Sea EEZ of Thailand. From the above data, it can be seen that during the months of March to May, the salinity in the Andaman Sea varied not more than 1 ppt.

From the results of the research of the Andaman Sea (Fig. 3-5), the thermocline zone, which most influenced the behavior of fish, was formed in the average layer from 20 to 170 m deep with a temperature ranging from 30.15° to 15.68° C.

BIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS A. Round Scads Decapterus Maruadsi

Round scads belonging to the genus Decapterus in Vietnamese marine waters are represented by 4 species, namely: Decapterus maruadsi (White tip scad), D. maruadsi is the most common species. maruadsi are given as follows:. maruadsi is widely distributed in the marine waters of Vietnam and has been found in coastal areas from the Gulf of Tonkin to the Gulf of Thailand, mainly at depths of 30 - 60 meters. maruadsi caught by traditional pelagic fisheries have body lengths ranging from 60 to 239 mm, mainly from 120 to 189 mm. There are some differences in the length frequency distribution of fish caught during the northeast monsoon season and the southwest monsoon season. Echo chart recordings and catch composition of samples from the test fishery with bottom and pelagic trawls determined the day-night vertical migration of the D.

It was found from the bottom during the day and to the upper layers at night.

Mackerels Rastrelliger Kanagurta

By acoustic and swept area methods, the total biomass and total allowable catch (TAC) of D. Indian mackerel caught in the Vietnamese waters belonging to 4 age groups, of which two-year-old fish group is predominant and accounts for an average of 64.4%, one year old group accounted for 19.7%, three year old group - 12.0% and four year old group only 3.8%. kanagurta grew very fast in the first year, at the end of the first year the length of newly hatched R. kanagurta reached an average of 113 mm. March) until the end of the rainy season (October) with two peaks in March - June and September - October.

According to the results of the tuna driftnet catch, it was assumed that neritic tuna fishermen migrate from the off-shore areas of the South China Sea to the sea waters of the central areas of Vietnam in January - February. Roughly speaking, the total production of all species of tuna in Vietnam's seawater was estimated to be about 30,000 MT/year. Resources of shared stock in seawater in Vietnam have been mostly studied in coastal areas, while in off-shore areas few studies had been carried out.

The unit price (catch value/catch quantity) of the three species groups in the region from 1976 to 1992 is shown in Table 3 and Figure 3. In the unit price of Indian mackerel in the region from 1976 to 1992, the price increased dramatically from US$ 0.48/kg.

On the Indo-Pacific mackerel unit price in the region from 1976 to 1992, the price showed less variation throughout this period with a minimum of USD 0.44/kn.

POTENTIAL YIELD

Therefore, it can be considered that there are certain possibilities of more increase of round shed catches in the region instead of the catches in and 1992 which are included in the potential yield zone. Therefore, it can be considered that there are certain possibilities of overexploitation of Indian mackerel in the region. On Indo-Pacific mackerel, the catches from 1982 to 1992 showed an increasing trend with some fluctuations below the potential yield zone (Fig. 16), on the other hand, the CPU values ​​by ring signal from 1986 to 1990 showed a showed a decreasing trend (see Fig. 11).

Therefore, it can be assumed that there are some opportunities for overexploitation of Indo-Pacific mackerel even if catches are within the potential yield zone.

BIOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Estimated potential yield, recent three-year average and catch in 1992 for round mackerel, Indian mackerel and Indo-Pacific mackerel are shown in Table 14. In Indian mackerel, catches from 1983 to 1988 remained constant in the yield area of possible and then it showed an increasing trend until 1992 (Fig. 15), on the other hand, CPUE values ​​by track from 1984 to 1990 showed a clear downward trend (see Fig. 8). Since the general consideration of the status of round mackerel, Indian mackerel and Indo-Pacific mackerel was described above on the basis of general fisheries statistics, more detailed examinations of the main species (group) should be done in the near future.

To carry out a detailed analysis, quality data on various fishery biological points for important species, more reliable catch and effort statistics etc. are needed. for the collection and exchange of information between researchers and the organizations concerned.

In the early 1980s, tuna fishing on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia would normally show that Thunnus tonggol was the most dominant. This change in species composition was likely related to the change in the main fishing gear used for tuna fishing. In the Philippines, frigate and bullet tuna were the dominant tuna species, normally accounting for up to 45% of the catch (Barut, 1995).

These boats could fish in the waters of the Malaysian Exclusive Economic Zone.
