The Penang Botanic Gardens : An overview
The Penang Botanic Gardens (PBG) is Malaysia's oldest botanic garden, established since 1884, with the aim to cultivate and propagate economically important plants such as cloves, nutmeg and
rubber.
Subsequently, the role of PBG expanded to
include the role of a plant research centre, focusing on the native plants of Penang and its surrounding regions.
Botanical collections, herbariums and references were housed in the PBG to assist in this
function, until the PBG experienced a decline in development from the 1980s onwards.
In 2004, the original 72 acres of the PBG was expanded to 598 acres to include the surrounding valley and rainforest. This expansion is an important milestone for development of the PBG and have opened up avenues for
opportunities, potential as well as threats on developing the PBG.
This then calls for the re-evaluation of PBG role in the 21st century.
