Keywords: ABSTRACT

systematic review, hadith, authentication

This article presents the findings of a systematic literature review (SLR) on the topic of hadith authentication from publications indexed by Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) from year 2000 until 2021. The selection of literature was done by searching for articles related to hadith authentication which initially collected 107 articles. This number the was reduced to 37 only after the screening process eliminating duplicate studies and those that did not pertain to the theme of this study. The research is carried out in three stages: the first is planning, the second is carrying out the analysis, and the third is reporting the findings. A systematic literature review on this issue is highly intriguing, and it is essential to do so in order to provide a comprehensive overview of the topic and to identify its deficiencies so that it may be improved by other researchers.

1. Introduction

Authentication is defined as the process or activity of establishing the truth, authenticity, and validity of anything. In the context of science of hadith, it refers to the classification of hadith as authentic or falsified (Binbeshr et.al, 2021). Nevertheless, the author believes that classification is the consequence of authentication and not the method itself. Ignoring this authentication procedure might have unfavourable consequences, such as the usage and spread of unauthorized hadiths in the form of fraudulent hadiths (mawdu’) or really flimsy hadiths (daif jiddan). This has the knock-on effect of exposing society to erroneous ideas, heresy, and superstition in their religious matters (Hayei 2015, Ariffin & Ahmad, 2016). In the last two decades, scholars have given considerable attention to hadith authenticity via their study. They have conducted research in a variety of areas, including the examination of hadith authenticity in classical or contemporary publications as well as an investigation of authentication methods. Therefore, it is deemed crucial to perform a systematic literature review in order to acquire a better knowledge of the study's purpose and scope in regard to hadith authenticity. A systematic literature review is a form of literature highlighting designed to identify, select and evaluate specific articles or documents to answer research questions that have been set (Dewey & Drahota, 2016). According to Xiao and Watson (2017), a systematic literature review helps to assess the validity and quality of the study while revealing its weaknesses, consistency and contradictions. Literature review is considered an important feature in academic studies because it can push the boundary of knowledge beyond its limits.

This research compiles hadith authentication publications from top journals indexed by Scopus and Web of Science (WoS). The purpose of limiting the selection of articles from indexed-only journals is to ensure the quality of the selected articles. The initial search returned 107 articles pertaining to hadith authenticity. After a series of screening procedures, however, the number then was cut to 37.

2. Research Methodology

2.1 Methods of Review

This is qualitative descriptive research aimed to identify, evaluate and integrate past studies (Bem, 1995). An effective SLR involved three major stages, namely; planning, conducting and reporting (Kitchenham et.al 2007, Ramdani 2021).

2.2 Research Questions

Research questions is important in order to give direction and focus on the review topic (Ramdani, 2021). To draw up research questions PICOC method is utilised, namely;

1. Population: A collection of articles from various journals 2. Intervention: An interesting issue to explore

3. Comparison: Comparison of research results 4. Outcome: Results from research

5. Context: Setting and environment

Based on the PICOC method, research on hadith authentication classified in Table 1.

Intervention Authentication, verification, validation, takhrij Comparison Not carried out

Outcome Novelty is further research opportunities Context No particular fixed context

Based on PICOC, research questions and objectives were developed as shown in Table 2.

Table 2. Research Questions and Objectives

No Questions Objective

1 Which journals show research on hadith authentication?

To identify which journal publish about hadith authentication.

2 Who research about hadith authentication? To identify researchers who discuss about hadith authentication.

3 What is the research topic? To explore issues and gaps in past studies 2.3 Search Strategy

To collect studies, search string method is adopted with ‘hadith authentication’ serves as a primary keyword.

This keyword then varied into numerous similar words such as verification, validation and takhrij to bring in more relevant studies related to the topic.

The database for conducting related journals includes Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), Researchgate, JSTOR, Emerald and Google Scholar. Time interval also enforced by looking for studies from year 2000 and above only to keep research’s novelty.

Based on database distribution shown in Table 3, Scopus is number one database on hadith authentication by 45 articles, followed by Researchgate with 33, Web of Science (WoS) with 14 and Emerald with 13 articles. Jstor database is the least contribution to the topic by only one study.

2.4 Article Selection

Selection of articles are carried out in various stages as shown in Fig. 2.

Vol. 13, No. 25 (JUNE 2023)

Figure 2. Process flow of searching and selecting articles

The total number of returned articles is 107. This number then is scanned to make sure they are in accordance with outlined search strategy. After the scanning, 60 articles that was not indexed by Scopus and Web of Science (WoS), published before 2000 or irrelevant to the topic were excluded. Therefore, a total of 37 articles were included in this review.

Systematic review must be performed with meticulous steps and rigorous procedures to warrant a highest quality of review (Okoli & Schabram, 2010). Thus, in this review only articles indexed by Scopus dan Web of Science (WoS) selected to be analysed. 4. Conclusion

This systematic literature review analysis conducted from article journals indexed in Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) has gathered 37 studies discussing various topics and sub-topics on hadith authentication. The review also shows there is considerable attention given by researchers to the topic of hadith authentication in the span of last two decades especially on the aspect of digital authentication. This review however had several

(15)

Vol. 13, No. 25 (JUNE 2023)

limitations such as only focusing on journals indexed by Scopus and Web of Science (WoS). In addition, article searching in this review was conducted on digital medium only neglected manual technique.

Relatively, a comprehensive and quality study on hadith authentication is still limited in number compared to other discipline and area of study. Thus, researchers are recommended to investigate various features to explore further directions on this topic.
