Introduction
Knowledge management is a work concept whereby knowledge of an individual or an organisation is systematically captured, collated, stored for easy retrieval and use. The successful practice of knowledge management will enhance individual and organisation’s efficiency and effectiveness. In this ICT age, the practice of knowledge management is supported by information technology. The knowledge management concept in the work place was adopted as one of the key tools to achieve what was envisioned in the Knowledge Economy announced by the Malaysian Government several years ago. Malaysia is now one of the countries in the forefront of adopting its practice and many government organisations, private companies, large corporate conglomerates, universities and research institutes have adopted the practice of knowledge management as part of the organisation’s work process. The practice of knowledge management will enable the knowledge to be retained in the organisation. Furthermore, the knowledge bank of the organisation will enlarge very rapidly when the existing knowledge is used which in turn generates new knowledge.
In conjunction with Eleventh Regional Congress on Geology, Mineral and Energy Resources of Southeast Asia (GEOSEA 2009) from 8-10 June 2009 to celebrate the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE), the Southeast Asia Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (SEADPRI-UKM), the Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programme in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP) and the Geological Society of Malaysia (GSM), with support from the JT Frank Academy and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), are organising this “Workshop on the Practice of Knowledge Management for Enhanced Performance”. The objective of the workshop is to bring awareness to the participants the concept of knowledge management as a modern effective tool that can help achieve organisational excellence.
