Today is Day 46 of the enhanced community quarantine.
Today we have conducted our second institutional Zoom conference aptly on the topic of the Pulmonology of the COVID-19 Infection. The lecture was ably delivered by one of our Strike Team Pulmonologists, Dr. Maricar Limpin. Spearheading and chairing the conference was Dr. Gilbert Vilela, co-chaired by Dr. Aileen Banzon. A foretaste of how our training conferences will be, the conference has the advantage of a more focused attention among those invited which of course were the training fellows and several consultants. One area for improvement is for a more interactive Q and A among the trainees. It is hoped that as we go along, we will get to hear more from them. Such a learning activity is not meant to end with the end of the Zoom session. It should be a trigger to learn, read more about the topic. Online learning should prove to be just as fruitful if not even more so than traditional learning. This is the challenge for both the trainors and the trainees.
Today, we have a total in-patient COVID Care census of sixty-seven (67). We are including from here on all our Confirmed, Suspect and Probable COVID patients plus our staff on hospital quarantine.
Our total in-patient COVID census is at forty-nine (49). We had six (6) admissions, three (3) Probable COVID PHC staff who tested positive on serology, and three (3) non-PHC COVID Suspects, that included one(1) S/P CABG patient, one (1) CVA patient, and one (1) CAD patient, the latter of whom unfortunately expired.

As we continue to take care of our COVID-19 patients, we are faced with the challenges of the “new normal,” not only in our patient care delivery but equally so in the training and education of our residents and fellows. This is a time ripe for innovations that we hope will lead to better results than the status quo. Online learning according to some sources, as gleaned from post-graduate online learning courses seemed to have resulted in higher grades over the traditional classroom learning. Other more conservative sources report at best similar academic performance between online students as traditional students. With the “new
normal,” education and training at the PHC will not be exclusively online as we still have the traditional consultant-trainee interaction during online conferences and ward rounds. We will not be short of a myriad of cardiovascular cases albeit with COVID-19 affectation always a consideration. Under a hood of optimism, we hope that his new normal will be able to achieve a much better learning outcome for our trainees. We just need to all together put our best foot forward.
