READING— MARK 10:17-27
Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him,
“You are lacking in one thing.
Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor And you will have treasure in heaven;
Then come, follow me.”
REFLECTION
It was while reading this passage that I was reminded of a student I met when I first taught Christian Living.
Karl wrote a beautiful prayer for our class that I have kept since. More than the words of his prayer, it was the sincerity and earnestness of his desire to be good that touched me. Karl, you see, was always in trouble.
A regular at the Assistant Principal’s Office, Karl never quite made it. Because of academic and discipline problems, he had to leave school.
One of the best things we can do for those we lead and teach is to look at them and see them differently. Self-acceptance is quite misleading
because it is something we cannot give ourselves unless somebody else gives it first to us. Only when somebody sees me as acceptable do I begin to
become aware of what is acceptable and special in me.
I have never heard from Karl again since he left. But in those like him, we hear an invitation from Jesus to see them differently— for Jesus looked at this unnamed man with love. When was the last time we looked at those we lead and teach with love? How has our way of seeing them liberated them?
RESPONSE
Dear Loving God, at the start of this day, please give me strength and courage to do good in my studies.
Help me understand the lessons, which the teacher will teach. Please guide me today until the end of the school year. Help me to avoid temptation and help me to be honest in my works. Give me strength to be more attentive and to be a good student and when the school year ends, make me realize that this school year was the best and this year taught me a lot. AMEN.
(Karl S.) To “really see” someone, especially someone who looks up
to you, is to give that person an important blessing. In a gaze of recognition, of understanding, in an appreciative look, there is deep blessing. Good kings see their people; good parents see their kids; good teachers see their students;
good executives see their employees. We are blessed by being seen.
Today, the young are not being seen enough in this way.
Our youth are acting out in all kinds of ways as a means of getting our attention. One of the deepest hungers inside young people is the hunger for adult connection, the desire
to be recognized, seen, by a significant adult. They need for us to see them. They desperately need the blessing that comes from our gaze.

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
(In association with the De La Salle Brothers of the Lasallian East Asia District)
Loving God,
your Son, Jesus, has shown us that an open heart finds the way. Help me to find my way in this world.
Keep my heart open to following Jesus’ way of serving others in love.
Give me the courage to accept the guidance You offer me through my family, my friends and my parish community.
Through the Holy Spirit, You call me to a particular way of life.
If it is the way of a priest, sister, brother or deacon, then help me to walk it in joyful service to Your people.
With You, my God, I know I can find my way.
Amen.
