Implications on Teacher Preparation for Reading Instruction

Abstract

There

is

a

growing

body

of

evidence that teachers

significantly

affect

children's reading achievement. In this vein, the

researcher

conceptualized

this

descriptive study,

which

sought

to

determine the reading comprehension and attitude towards reading

of

future teachers

of

reading,

specifically, 91

second year teacher education students

of Holy Angel University during School Year 2007 - 2008.

Results

showed

that majority of the

selected students (83.5%), regardless

of

gender

and major,

have

positive

attitude towards reading. However,

majority (81.3%),

regardless

also of

gender

and major, have

poor reading

proficiency.

Thus, measures should be undertaken

to

improve the reading comprehension

of the

selected teacher education students as part

of

their sound preparation as reading instructors.
