This sketch, drawn by Emilio Vito of the Manila office, shows how the Palidan-Suyoc drainage tunnel will intersect the Consolidated Suyoc workings at the 2,200—400 feet below the present deepest level. The project will be completed in just over a year and, as can be seen from the sketch, will allow the exploration of a considerable area. This sketch, due to space limitations, is not drawn to scale, but only gives the general outline.
Work on the dump tip is complete for now; the equipment has been tested and proved satisfactory. 1 is progressing and it is expected that this building will be completed by the end of March. The road from Suyoc to the mess house has been widened and culverts and drainage ditches have been completed.
Due to the increased throughput, the number of workers on the tunnel construction site is 79 per day.

As a general rule, stones forming the pitch are laid horizontally, but as the rock fill which forms the downstream part of the Shing Mun Dam is not founded on stone, but on relatively soft material, it was certain that it would settle. It was thought that if the pitching was laid at an angle of 45° in a series of alternating slopes, the setting would not be so easily noticed, especially if joints were broken at intervals of a few stones. So it was that the design of pitching was first developed solely to remove the effects of settlement, but when working out the details it was noticed that the changing slopes led to the formation of a pointed arch and that the arches gave additional strength to resist any ten.
To date, the central part of the rock fill has settled approx. 4 feet, some of the settlement has occurred since the demolition was laid out, but there is not approx. Although it is unusual to bring a dam up to higher lifts than 5 or 6 feet, it was decided to construct the diaphragm in 20-foot lifts at Shing Mun Dam. It is customary to bolt "soldiers" to the face of a dam to carry sliding panels between them against which to place the concrete, but at Shing Mun, with the special and relatively thin dia.
The total advance for the month of February on the Sampaguita, Aurora and Luna sections was 1,019.5 feet. Greenan, of the Board of Consulting Engineers, has been in the area investigating for some time. The Batavia Journal announces that the well-known Marsman concern, recently mentioned, has commenced an investigation of the known copper deposits of Minahassa (N. Celebes), on the north coast of Tomini Bay. A few years ago, about 1904, Minahasa was explored by the well-known mining engineer Koperberg, who was very attracted by the rich copper ores and wrote very scientific and interesting messages about it in the annals of the mining department. As is well known, many gold mining companies were established in this district over the years and gradually disappeared again.
Bornhaupt has been instructed to continue on site to conduct initial investigations and there will no doubt be news of the pro. It is well known that the ore is quite poor, but both Professor Caron and the Krupp firm, Germany, have invented a process that makes extracting this ore affordable.

Rapid progress is being made on the construction of the 50-ton smelter at Mambulao, near the San Mauricio Mining Com. At the top the contours of the sample mill and press can be seen. The next photo shows another view of the same unit with part of the Smelter itself on the left.
In the center Clarence Weekley, general mill superintendent for Marsman and Company, is discussing the project with S. The bottom two photos show the steel structure of the various buildings, which will comprise the Smelter plant, being put into position. The melting is expected to be completed in the first part of May.
The company has decided that there are important objections to this policy and further that it is subject to some misunderstanding by the shareholders and the investing public. One objection, from the point of view of the corporation management, was that the board, in the interest of uniformity, felt somewhat. The practice that has been followed so far had the further objection that the so-called 'extra' dividend was missing.
The situation facing Du Pont is similar to that facing mining companies around the world. Often, due to established precedent, mining companies pay such dividends, hindering their future business. Just because a mining company doesn't pay regular quarterly dividends doesn't mean it isn't a paying professional.
Often a dividend delay simply means that company officials are carrying out plans that will ultimately benefit shareholders far more than any early dividend.

To be an "experienced" mining engineer at the age of thirty-three is an unusual achievement and speaks well of the man's education and experience. He came to the Philippine Islands in December 1924 to become an engineer and assayer for the Benguet Consolidated Mining Company. In May 1926 he was put in charge of exploration work on Benguet's Gomok lease, later re.
In October 1936 he was promoted to the position of assistant manager of the Northern Division of Marsman and Company. Members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers at their annual meeting in Washington on March 6 were told by Mr. Marsman that he believed gold production in the Philippines would exceed twenty-five million dollars in 1937.
Crosby married in 1929 Miss Flora Colbath, the daughter of the Benguet Consolidated superintendent at the time. Great Britain and Japan, as well as the United States, have shown active interest in expanding mining in the Philippines, he said. Part of his time in the United States was spent in a conference with President Ma. Quezon and his party in Wash. Marsman is a member of the National Economic Council, and his arrival in Washington was timed so that he could assist the President. Marsman plans to leave the United States at the end of March for Amsterdam.
Marsman's interests are exploring mining opportunities in the Dutch East Indies and Mr. Marsman intends to finalize negotiations. cooperation with the Dutch government. Prospective work continued as planned in the month of February. Intensive work on the northwest part of the property brought to light several interesting old works. The Hong Kong Telegraph stated that Mr Hull's hiring was part of the move towards closer Sino-British contacts in South China.
