This study probed into the attitude of first-year teacher education students towards learning English from two universities in Pampanga, taking into account the behavioral, cognitive and emotional components of attitude. This paper explored
if
there was any significant difference in the students'attitudes towards learning the English language in terms of their gender and program.A
total of 212 respondents from both public and private universities answered 45 questions to determine their current attitude towards the English language.T-test was used to test the difference between the attitudes in reference to the students' gender, program and school. Concerning the three components
of
attitudes (behavioral, cognitive and emotional), the respondents showed positive attitudes towards learning English. When the variables were grouped according to gender and attitude; and program and attitude, the results showed no significant difference. However, when the variables were grouped
according to school and attitude, there was a significant difference. In reference to the resultso enriching the curriculum in English instruction, through benchmarking from other universities, is thus recommended.
Furthermore, testing the model presented in this paper is highly recommended.
