The study aimed to explain the respondents' perceptions on the attitudes and behavj-or of coaches on the
social and emotional- nbeds of injured athletes and their being determinants to effective coaching. To be more
explicit, the following questions were addressed: 1)How may
the coaches be described by the respondents in terms of age
and sex? 2) As perceived by the coaches and athletes- respondents, what are the determj-nants of effective coaching j-n terms of attitudes and behavior of coaches on
the social and emotional needs of injured athletes? 3) To
what extent is the presence of each determinant ln coaches' coaching situation as perceived by the respondents? 4) Is there any significant relationship between the age and the
sex of coaches and their attitudes and behavior on the socj-al and emotional needs of injured athletes? 5) rs there any signifj-cant difference between the perceptions of injured athretes and of coaches on attitudes and behavior
of coaches on the social and emotional- needs of injured athl-etes? 6) rs there any significant difference between
the perceptions of injured athl-etes and of coaches on the
presence of each determinant in the coaches' coaching
situation?
The study 'used the descriptive-correlation method of research. The respondents were 23 athletic coaches and 2og
injured and non-j-njured athletes j-n two selected private high school-s. A survey was made on the dg€, sex,
sport/event, and the category injured or non-j_njured.
The questionnai-re served as the instrument in gathering the needed data. After the draft copy was checked
with the guidance of the adviser, the questionnaire was
pre-tested among 10 under traini-ng athletes. After suggestions were incorporated, the instrument was
administered to the official respondents. Data were

analyzed using Likert sca1e,
percentage distribution. T-test, frequency, mean and
The ages of the 23 coaches in the two schools in
Angeles Clty ranged from 20 to 65,flve (or 2I.8 percent)of
whom belonged to the age bracket of 26-30, and four (or 77.4 percent)each belonged to the age brackets of 36-40 and
46-50. Most coaches were dominated by males outnumbering
female coaches with 9L.3e" (2! male coaches ) and 8 .72 (2 female coaches), respectively. As to the attitudes and
behavior of coaches towards injured athletes, the l-evel of importance showed by coaches was .rvery iuportant', in terms
of socj-al- and emotional needs. Meanwhile, the determinants shown by the coaches to social and emotional needs of injured athletes were Nmuch present". This was true from
the point view of athl-ete-respondents who claimed that
coaches were perceived to be $veaT inportant" j-n terms of addressing the social and emotional needs of injured athletes. Statistical- analysis revealed that there was no
eigmificant relationship between the age and sex of coaches
and their atti-tudes and behavior on the social and emotional needs of injured athletes; there was no
sigmificant difference between the perceptj-ons of injured athletes and of coaches on the attitudes and behavior of coaches on the social and emotional needs of in3ured
athletes; and there was no significant difference between
the perceptions of injured athletes and of coaches' on the
presence of each determinant in coaches' coaching
situation.
From the results of the study, the following conclusion were drawn: A number of the coaches are aged 26-
30 years because at this age bracket coaches are very
assertive, active and fuIl of energy; and some were 40 to 42 years oId for the reason that at this age coaches are
arready focused and very positive and rearistic in l-ife.
Age is not a determj-ning factor in terms of competence in coaching. Majority of the coaches were ma1es. with regard
to athl-etes' profile, most athlete-respondents were aged t9 and males. Based on the findings on how coaches perceived
their attitudes and behavior on the sociar and emotionar
needs of injured athletes, all coach-respondents are
attentive and understanding to these needs. As assessed by
athlete-respondents, all coaches are sympatheti-c and
patient to the social- emotionar needs of injured athl-etes.
They are all socially and emotionarly-ori-ented. They
