PASSAGE, KMO hold learning event on journal article writing

T

wenty-nine faculty,

researchers, and staff from 13 state universities and colleges participated in the Training- workshop on Journal Article Writing on July 30–August 1, 2019 at CPAf Rooms 303-304.

The activity was conducted by the Philippine Association of Agri-vironment Educators and Entrepreneurs, Inc. (PASSAGE), co-sponsored by the College of Public Affairs and Development (CPAf) and co-organized by the Knowledge Management Office (KMO) of CPAf.

“The training-workshop aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills on writing publishable journal articles,” said Dr. Maria Ana T. Quimbo, PASSAGE vice- president for Luzon and chair of the organizing committee. “Since we, in the academe, are expected to create and share knowledge, publishing articles in reputable journals will help us in fulfilling this responsibility,” added Dr.

Evelie P. Serrano, KMO head, in her opening remarks.

Through lecture, workshop, and output critiquing, participants learned from the knowledge and experiences of seasoned and well-published UPLB faculty- researchers.

Dr. Inocencio E. Buot, Jr., professor and UP scientist, talked about “Relevance of Research for National Development.” He emphasized the importance of research and what topics can contribute to community and national development.

He reminded the participants of the need to conduct research properly, and that it should end up with publications.

The main resource speaker, Dr. Ofelia K. Bautista, UPLB consultant and writer and editor of various publications, delivered lectures on the dynamics of writing publishable articles. She also facilitated the writeshop and critiquing of outputs.

“I liked how the training was done because there’s a writeshop after every lecture.

I find it effective because the participants were given hands- on experiences. I also like the part where the participants can contribute their insights regarding a colleague’s work. It’s very constructive because people help you take a look at your work,” one of the participants shared.

“I have read a lot about writing research papers, but

I did not find the resources useful in helping me to rewrite my manuscript to make it

publishable,” another participant said. “Dr. Bautista really made it simple and practical,” she added.

Other speakers were Mr.

Roberto K. Bautista, Jr., private consultant; Asst. Prof. Roselle V. Collado of the Institute of Statistics, UPLB College of Arts and Sciences; and Dr. Serlie B.

Jamias, UPLB vice chancellor for community affairs and professor at the College of Development Communication. Mr. Bautista talked about “Verbal and Visual Presentation of Research,” while Asst. Prof. Collado discussed

“Statistics for Social Science in Agriculture.” On the other hand, Dr. Jamias shared her experiences

working with Dr. Bautista and what she has learned from her in terms of writing and editing.

PASSAGE, a non-profit professional organization based at CPAf, has been conducting various activities such as conferences and training-workshops to share research outputs and innovations and promote excellence of professional practice in the fields of agriculture, environment, and agri-entrepreneurial education.
