1. BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE PCAMRD

3) g a th e r in g o f database f o r v a r io u s end u s e r s ; and 4 ) p a c k a g in g and d is s e m in a tio n o f m ature te c h n o lo g ie s .

I n p u r s u in g i t s mandate, PCAMRD e s t a b lis h e d th e ARMIU i n J u ly , 1988. T h is in f o r m a t io n u n i t on f i s h e r i e s and a q u a tic re s o u rc e s i s e n v is io n e d to produce an im m e d ia te im p a c t on th e r e g i o n a l i z a t i o n o f R and D e f f o r t s i n th e c o u n tr y . B e in g th e f i r s t -o f i t s k in d i n th e P h ilip p in e s , ARMIU i s b e n e f it in g v a r io u s s e c to r s i n term s o f :

a q u a c u ltu r e te c h n o lo g ie s th ro u g h p u b l i c a t i o n s , c o m p u te riz e d d a ta bank and m edia.

I n f o r m a t io n on g a i n f u l l i v e l i h o o d p r o je c t s i n th e c o u n tr y s id e a re e n c o u ra g in g f i s h e r f o l k s to s t a r t t h e i r own b a c k y a rd v e n tu r e s . They a re now a b le to augment t h e i r meager income i n t h i s way.
2 .4 H e ig h te n e d awareness among F i l i p i n o s on th e need to p r o t e c t o u r f i s h e r y and a q u a tic re s o u rc e s .
ARMIU i n i t i a t e d an in f o r m a t io n campaign on th e need to save th e c o r a l r e e f s and in c re a s e th e p r o d u c t i v i t y o f
th e o c e a n ic w a te rs , c o a s ta l and e s tu a r in e a re a s and mangroves.
ACTIVITIES
The N a t io n a l A q u a tic Resources R and D System (NARRDS) in c lu d in g p r iv a t e s e c to r and s p e c ia liz e d a g e n c ie s i n th e P h ilip p in e s a re p r o v id e d w it h t im e ly and u p d a te d in f o r m a t io n by ARMIU. The f o l l o w i n g s e r v ic e s are co ve re d i n th e n a t io n a l in f o r m a t io n program ;

The NARRDS c o n s is ts o f 4 n a t io n a l c e n te r s , 6 r e g io n a l c e n te r s and 34 c o o p e r a tin g s t a t io n s spread o u t a l l o v e r th e 12 re g io n s o f th e c o u n tr y ( F ig . 1a & 1 b ).

W ith th e v e r y l i m i t e d re s o u rc e s o f ARMIU a t p r e s e n t, i t c o u ld h a r d ly cope w it h th e in f o r m a t io n needs o f NARRDS.
