BACKGROUND
The Bay o f B e n g a l P rog ram m e (BOBP) i s a r e g i o n a l program m e o f t h e FAO. S even c o u n t r i e s - B a n g la d e s h , I n d i a , I n d o n e s ia , M a la y s ia , M a ld iv e s , S r i L a n k a an d T h a i l a n d p a r t i c i p a t e i n t h e p ro g ra m m e .
I t s m a in c o m p o n e n t i s t h e p r o j e c t a l l - S c a l e F i s h e r f o l k C o m m u n itie s i n t h e Bay o f B e n g a l fu n d e d j o i n t l y by S I DA and DANIDA. I t began i n 19 87 f o r a d u r a t i o n o f 5 y e a r s . I t s u c c e e d s t h e SID A—fu n d e d FAO p r o j e c t D e v e lo p m e n t o f S m a ll- S c a le F i s h e r i e s i n t h e Bay o f B e n g a l w h ic h was o p e r a t i o n a l 1 9 7 9 - 8 6 . The BOBP s e e k s t o d e v e lo p and d e m o n s t r a t e new t e c h n o lo g i e s and m e t h o d o lo g ie s t o im p r o v e t h e c o n d i t i o n s o f m a r in e s m a l l - s c a l e f i s h e r f o l k . I t a l s o a s s i s t s member— c o u n t r i e s i n w i d e r - s c a l e a p p l i c a t i o n o f s u c c e s s f u l t e c h n o lo g i e s an d m e t h o d o lo g ie s (See A p p e n d ix 1 ) .
