Blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are important tools in forensic entomology

Blowflies are associated with carrion at specific life stages

1. Larval forms (1 st -3 rd instar) of blowflies

associate themselves to only one substrate:

they feed only in one host throughout the stages

2. The larval crop, where individuals store their

food, is retained to the imago (adult) stage

Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) struck the Philippines on November 8, 2013 and is one of the strongest typhoons that have struck land. An estmated 14.1 M people have been afected by the disaster with 6,201 people dead and 1785 missing (Lum &

Margesson, 2014)

Evaluation of species mortality after mass disasters can be done with DNA in blowfly guts

Conclusions

1. Molecular identficaton of blowfly gut contents as an additonal technique in surveying forest fauna

2. Evaluaton of faunal mortality in forests after mass disasters is yet to be explored but is

very much feasible
