This guide on "Simplified Keys to Soil Range Identification" has been developed to make the field identification of soils easier. The guidebook contains the different colors, texture, pH, coarse fragments and specks of the most common soils in Isabela and contains four simple steps to identify the soil series right in the field. In the Philippines, the project "Simplifying the Philippine Soil Series for Rice and Maize" began in 2005 under the Nutrient Management Support System (NuMaSS) to provide management recommendations for soils identified in the field.
Compare the soil sample with the color chart in the “Simplified Keys to Soil Series” manual (see page 73). Simplified Keys to Soil Series” is a tool/guide for identifying soil series in the field by following simple steps, for use by researchers, agricultural technologists, extension agents, farmers and other stakeholders in the rice industry. It involves just five basic soil properties (color, texture, pH, coarse fragments and spots) at a soil depth of 30-50 cm and four simple steps for identifying the soil ranges in the field.

SOIL COLOR GROUPS
Black/Grayish brown
Black/Grayish brown Texture: Clay
Light Brown/Yellowish Brown
Light Brown/Yellowish Brown Texture: Clay
It is a typical representative of the large group of Epiaqualfs: aqu, it has an aqueous moisture regime, i.e. it is an inceptisol (epts, Latin, inceptum, beginning), which means that this soil is just beginning to develop and shows soil horizons. It is a representative of a large group of Endoaquerts found in areas with pronounced wet and dry seasons (ustic).
It is a mollisol (olls, from Latin mollis, meaning soft) found in areas with pronounced wet and dry seasons (ust, ustic). It is an Alfisol (alfs) found in areas with well-distributed rainfall (From the word Udic), with a Kandian characteristic (kandi), i.e. finely structured soil with 35-60% clay content, without any particular mineral of any kind dominating the soil (Mixed).
It is an Alfisol (alfs) found in areas with pronounced wet and dry seasons (Ust from the word ustic), with minimal horizontal complexity (Hapl). Fine clay-textured soil with a moderate amount of clay with no particular mineral of any kind dominating the soil (mixed). It is a representative of the large group of Epiaquolls: a Mollisol (olls), from Latin, mollis meaning soft.
It has an aquic (aqu) moisture regime where it is saturated for extended periods of time, manifested by a gray color with or without spots, indicating poor internal drainage. It is a representative of the large group of Haplustalfs: Hapl, the bottom has minimal complexity of horizonation; Usually it has a ustic moisture regime, i.e. it is an Alfisol, alfs, which means that there is alluvial accumulation of clay in the subsurface horizons from the underlying horizons. Soil fertility is moderate to high (average OM, low P, average K) with low to high pH.
It is a representative of the large group of Haplustepts that occur on river floodplains and are subject to seasonal river flooding (Fluventic). Hapl, means that the soil has a minimum complexity of horizonation; ust, from the word ustic, a moisture regime characterized by pronounced wet and dry seasons; epts, This is an Inceptisol (Latin, inceptum or beginning), which indicates that this soil is just beginning to develop and shows soil horizons. It is a typical (typical) representative of large group of Eutrudepts: Eutr, indicating high base saturation found in areas with udic (ud, well distributed rainfall), moisture regime.
It is an Alfisol (alfs), meaning that there is alluvial accumulation of clay in the subsurface horizons from the underlying horizons. Soil with a fine structure and a clay content of 35-60%, where no specific mineral in the soil dominates (mixed).
Crop Suitability Analysis
It is the ultimate goal of soil surveying and this can be arrived at through good judgment and a thorough assessment of soil properties and qualities such as soil depth, texture, slope, drainage, erosion, flooding and fertility. Based on these characteristics, the suitability of a particular land area for crop production is determined. It implies which crop(s) would provide the greatest benefit in terms of productivity and profitability from a given soil type, indicated by S1 as the most suitable, S2 as moderately suitable and S3 as marginally suitable.
The symbol N indicates that the crop is either currently not suitable (N1), where the impact of limitation is so severe that it reduces yield and requires expensive inputs, or is permanently not suitable (N2), where the limitations cannot be permanently corrected . Crop suitability analysis also provides information on soil properties that limit the production of specified crops. This means that you can achieve 75% of the crop's potential yield when the soil index is highly suitable (S1), while less than 25% of the potential yield when the soil index is not suitable (N).
