St. John Baptist De La Salle as a Servant Leader
What is Servant Leadership?
Good leadership motivates and organizes others to accomplish a task or to think with creativity, vision, integrity and skill for the benefit of all concerned. Servant-leadership serves others by devoting in their development and well-being for the
benefit of the common good.
Servant-leaders aspire to be great only in their service to others. They are committed to serving others with integrity; humility; sincere concern; a generous, forgiving and giving heart; and self-discipline. They relate to others by caring for, and consulting others. They are willing to sacrifice personally for the well-being of others.
The one who rules, Jesus taught, should be like the one who serves (Lk 22:26).
Greatness in God's sight is not found in how many people serve the leader but rather in how faithfully the leader serves others.
Concerned only with oneself Servant Leader The leader’s objective is to be served.
Seeks first to be understood; then, to understand.
Clings to power and position.
The leader’s objective is to serve.
Seeks first to understand; then, to be understood.
Is willing to step aside for someone more qualified.
St. La Salle exemplified servant leadership
Saint La Salle exemplified servant-leadership by founding and leading the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the first religious congregation exclusive for lay men. This congregation faced different challenges even from Church hierarchy but their belief sustained them and believed that if their undertakings are God’s work they will overcome whatever challenges they may face. Indeed, they multiplied and
flourished through the many years.
Servant-leadership implies that leaders primarily leads by serving others.
Throughout his life St. La Salle has demonstrated this in the many hats he had to wear: as the head and provider for his siblings, as a brother to his Brothers, as a
priest and shepherd to the poor, and as a son to his Creator. Though superior in many aspects, he chose to live a life of humility, faith, piety, and obedience which became a living example to others.
St. La Salle was not only a teacher to his students, he is one example of living up to what you preach. He became a leader not because of his charm nor did he clamor for it. Instead, he showed compassion and love to his fellow brothers. The brothers realized that being a leader is not always being on top and giving orders. Sometimes, we appreciate the value of being a leader when we learn how to serve others and value the importance of leadership through service.
