The Southeast Asian Development Advisory Group (SEADAG) of the Asia Society, New York, sponsored this meeting. McGee, The Southeast Asian City: A Social Geography of the Primate Cities of Southeast Asia (New York: Fred-erick A. Praeger, Publishers, 1967), ch. 19 The long-assumed correlation between a colonial legacy and metropolitan dominance in Third World nations was recently confirmed by Arnold S.

32 Consequently, the city size arrangements in Southeast Asia corroborate empirical findings from other parts of the world. Rereading Mark Jefferson's "The Law of the Primate City," however, I found no support for his claim. 45 The multifunctional role of the primate city is detailed in almost all sustained commentaries on South Asian urbanism.

2 Many researchers have devoted themselves to the study of the relationship between industrialization and urbanization in the non-Western world. This is, of course, The South East Asian City, a book published in the mid-1960s in which T.

COLONIAL SITUATION, 1941

CONTEMPORARY SITUATION, 1970

In the cases of the Portuguese and Spanish, by contrast, the monarchies actively participated in colonization. In the early decades of the nineteenth century, a second phase of European involvement in Southeast Asia began to dawn. Rural sociologists have not yet penetrated the ranks of the new Mandarins.

In the interval between the said battle and the final occupation of the city by the United States, the Spanish authority hung lightly in the balance. Titherington, A History of the Spanish-American War (Freeport, New York: Books for Libraries Press, 1971), pp. Joostens was most impressed by an almost universal demand in the American press for the complete annexation of the Philippines.

Cardinal Gibbons continued to interest himself in the affairs of the Philippines, as Catholic Primate of the United States. 1 3 Strictly speaking, the situation is usually simply the reason for the speaker's action in the poem. But each poem affects us differently, and part of the reason lies in the precise manner of imitation.

In 'Summer Trees', the manner of doing things has mainly to do with the order of the speaker's impressions.

PUBLIC PERCEPTION OF BUREAUCRATIC PERFORMANCE IN UTTAR PRADESH (INDIA) AND ITS IMPACT

ON SOCIAL CHANGE AND MODERNIZATION*

A high percentage of respondents (56% rural men and 78% rural women; 51% urban men and 75% urban women) felt that there was not much they could do (Table VII) . Many of the left-wing unions active in the 1950s and early 1960s have been deregistered by the government. Table 1 shows that the differences in the reasons for not completing interviews reflect part of the trade union history already outlined.

The extreme views of policymakers and die-hard non-affiliates are clear. 11 The manner of speaking in an example can attract and retain the listener's attention, which is a factor that contributes to the success of a given communication. The fact that the number of new sources of the same information is increasing indicates dispersion.

Over time the message can become part of local folklore as it is passed down from one generation to the next. 33 Illustrations of the concepts related to agrarian reform are given in my paper cited in the previous footnote. The Indonesian government stated, "Japan is an Asian country that needs to be rehabilitated in the spirit of the UN.

But the final text of the peace treaty rejected Indonesia's suggestion of a plebiscite on the areas taken from Japan by the United States and the Soviet Union. Indonesia's suggestion for a full discussion at the Conference on the terms of the treaty was also rejected. At the San Francisco Peace Conference, Indonesian Foreign Minister Ahmad Subardjo wanted to make changes in some points of the peace treaty.

Opposition to the signing of the treaty also came from the powerful Natsir group within Premier Sukiman's Masjumi Party. Meanwhile, a controversy arose over the Government's actions regarding the Mutual Security Assistance Agreement with the United States which led to the downfall of the Sukiman Cabinet on February 23, 1952. The fall of the Sukiman Cabinet brought about a fundamental change brought about in the position. of Indonesia on the Japanese peace treaty.

Despite the proximity to the city center of Canton, the farmers in the village remained "tied to their agrarian tradition" on the eve of the communist takeover. Especially in the 1930s, most political leaders came from the military or the bureaucracy.

THE EARTH-DIVER MYTH: TOWARDS A THEORY OF ITS DIFFUSION IN ASIA

From the mud Old Man Coyote made the earth and then the first man and woman. Except for the Nanga Baiga again, an additional feature to element number (1) of the earth diver myth generally occurs. But the clay was taken (by the successful vulture) from heaven, instead of from the bottom of the sea.

These pillars remind us of the turtle's legs and then of element number (7) in the earth diver myth. Among the Shan in Central Burma,S4 the ants play the part of the divers in the primordial sea. 53 In other parts of the country, parallels can only be traced to some elements of the earth diving myth.

The rocks he had thrown down formed the land.55 In the Negros story, the following elements of the earth-diver myth are present: the primordial sea (element number 1); diving into the seabed (element number 6); and the subsequent growth of islands from the material taken from the seabed (element number 7). In Davao Province, Mindanao, the Bilaan tribe has a version that contains almost some elements of the earth diver myth. The Samals of the southern Philippines59 reported that the earth came from a boat in which dirt accumulated.

These are namely the existence of the primordial sea (1); diving for material from the bottom of this primeval sea (6); and the earthly world that arose from this material (7). Maceda, The Culture of the Mamanua· (Northeastern Mindanao) Compared to the Culture of Other· Negritos of Southeast Asia (Manila: Catholic Trade School, 1964), p. The cultural, geographical and historical situations that explain the existence of elements of the myth of sinking into the earth in Negros are not present in Bohol.

Pajo was very kind to us and showed us the original manuscripts where the bearer of the myth of the diver was named. Ganade reminded us by showing a picture of the fallen girl in the story. The same could be said for other primitive groups in the surrounding countries in Asia.
