ABSTRACT

Schizophrenia is a chronic illness that requires long term caregiving. The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to examine effect of the group empowerment program on caring capabilities among caregivers of persons with schizophrenia. The purposive sampling derived 14 caregivers of persons with schizophrenia in Meang Pan Hospital, Lampang, between June and July 2007. The group empowerment study conducted by the investigator was comprised of 4 steps; 1) discovering reality, 2) critical reflection, 3) taking charge for the appropriate self- care practices, and 4) holding on the effective self-care activities. The caring capabilities among caregivers of persons with schizophrenia questionnaire was used for collecting data before and after the empowerment program. The t-test was used to compare the difference between the pre and post test scores.

The study findings revealed that the group empowerment program could enhance caring capabilities among caregivers of persons with schizophrenia. The median score after participation in the group empowerment program was statistical significantly higher than before



entering the program at p value .05

The finding from this study can be used to guide nursing practice in promoting caring capabilities among caregivers of persons with schizophrenia who formed as a group. The longitudinal study was recommended to confirm sustainability of the result.
