Agronomic and Quality Evaluations of High Lysine Maize Hybrids. (C01-bhatnagar132308-poster)

Abstract:
Quality Protein Maize (QPM) is a high lysine opaque-2 maize with hard endosperm that increases the nutritional value of food and feed maize products. Our objectives were to evaluate testcrosses between QPM lines with different backgrounds and Tx804, a floury high lysine inbred adapted to temperate areas, for agronomic performance and endosperm quality. Fifty-two QPM testcrosses and eight commercial check hybrids (SR470, SL53, SR660 from Crows Seeds, Pioneer Brand 31B13 and 32R25, Dekalb DK668, DK 687 and Asgrow RX897) were evaluated in eight Texas environments using alpha lattice designs with two replications. Data was recorded for grain yield and agronomic traits, and analyzed per and across environments using SAS procedures. Tryptophan and methionine relative contents were estimated for both testcrosses and their parental inbreds. QPM hybrids had similar or earlier maturities than checks. Average grain yield for QPM hybrids (5.98 t ha-1) was lower than for non-QPM checks (8.71 t ha-1). QPM hybrids had 21% lower methionine content and 72.2% higher tryptophan content than non-QPM checks. Endosperm modification showed a negative correlation with tryptophan content (R2 = 0.207**). Soft endosperm inbreds had greater tryptophan content than hard endosperm inbreds. QPM hybrids yielded less and had greater protein quality than commercial hybrids.
