Abstract:

104 NILs of maize with mapped genetic markers were released by Univ. HI in 2004 and are available from the Maize Genet. Coop. The NILs were based on tropical flint inbred Hi27, and involved six or more BC. The present study was conducted to evaluate chlorophyll levels (SPAD) of 39 of these NILs, and to characterize them for agronomic traits and disease resistance. Silking occurred at 65 days after planting (DAP). Average SPAD increased from 24 (42DAP) to 41 (69DAP) and 40 (83DAP), with very low variability within inbreds. Mutants with about 50% and 20% loss of chlorophyll activity at maturity included g,Rg,yg2,zn and Cg,Og,pm,ws3, respectively. Interaction of mutant with growth stage was highly significant including variation for disease resistance, plant (PH) and ear height (EH), number of leaves (LPP) and other traits, some of which could be attributed to linkage of QTLs to the markers being introduced. We reported earlier on linkage of genes liguless-3 (Lg3) and golden (g) with

susceptibility to MMV (3L-80) and rust (Puccinia polysora) (10L-50), respectively. LPP was elevated above that of Hi27 only for mutant Cg (corngrass), with 49 LPP. PH and EH minimized in mutant nana (na) at 30 and 22 cm, respectively. The colored plant locus B and locus Lg were associated with

unusually tall plants. Further evidence for QTL linkages or pleiotropism of the mutants will be discussed.
