Analysis of Organochlorine pesticide residues in the Nile perch, Nile tilapia, and water of lake Victoria - Napoleon Gulf

Abstract:
43 Nile tilapia samples and 37 Nile perch samples were analyzed for lindane, aldrin, a-endosulfan, dieldrin p,p’-DDE and p,p’-DDT. No significant difference (á=0.05) in the residue levels between fish types for lindane, á-endosulfan, p,p’-DDE, p,p’-DDT and dieldrin were observed. The aldrin levels in Nile perch were significantly higher than the levels in Nile tilapia. No significant difference was observed in the distribution of residues in the different parts of Nile tilapia, although a difference for p,p’-DDE was observed in the Nile perch. There was no significant difference in fat content of the tissue of both fish species. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed a significant difference in the distribution of fats within the different parts of fish. No significant correlation was observed between fat content and organochlorine concentration. However, a bioconcentration tendency was observed.
