Abstract:

Polymer-coated urea (PCU) has been used successfully in the turf industry for several years, but has been cost prohibitive for agricultural use. Less expensive PCU is now becoming available for

agricultural use. This study was conducted to determine the effects of fertilizer application timing on winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) N uptake and yield when PCU or standard urea was applied.

The study was established in central and western Kentucky by fertilizing winter wheat with a single application of 67 kg N ha-1 as urea or PCU applied pre-plant, January (dormant), Feekes 3, Feekes 5, a split application at Feekes 3 (22 kg N ha-1) and Feekes 5 (45 kg N ha-1) of urea or an application of 22 kg N ha-1 as urea and 45 kg N ha-1 as PCU applied at Feekes 3. At the central KY location, fall applied PCU produced equal yields equivalent to the accepted split application practice currently used by producers. At the western KY location, yield of the combination urea/PCU treatment was higher than most other treatments. Fall applied PCU might be an alternative to spring applied urea for wheat grown on wet natured soils.
