Abstract:

Recent research in Kansas has focused on improving correlation of the SMP buffer for prediction of lime requirements and reviewing an alternative method for accurately predicting lime requirements.

Currently, Kansas State University uses the SMP buffer method, which was developed for use on mid-western soils with comparably high lime requirements. Our objectives were to i) determine if the current lime recommendations based on the SMP buffer pH are acceptable for Kansas’ soils, and ii) test whether a one point titration with KOH would improve the accuracy in predicting the lime requirement of these soils when compared to the SMP method. Laboratory and greenhouse incubation studies were initiated in 2004 to determine the correct lime requirement for several Kansas’ soils. Lime requirements were determined using the SMP buffer pH and using titration of soil samples with 0.1 N KOH. Previous research and preliminary results of this study indicate that the SMP buffer can reasonably predict lime requirements on these soil types. However, improvement to this technique may be made by continued correlation and calibration experiments for the SMP buffer on Kansas’ soils. The use of a one point titration may improve the accuracy of making lime recommendations in Kansas when compared to lime recommendations based on the SMP buffer pH.
