Abstract:
Soil chemical residues of ancient human activities remain trapped in the soils and floors of Maya ruins located in the Petén rain forest of Guatemala. Phosphate residues are indicative of food preparation, consumption and disposal activities while trace metals residues are found at ancient workshop and ceremonial areas where mineral pigments were used. Soil and floor samples were collected and extractable phosphate and heavy metal concentrations were determined. The result of these analyses delineate activity areas and provide useful information to archaeologists and soil scientists.
