Abstract:

This study was conducted using a rainfall simulator to determine the effect of single rain events (0, 3, 6 and 9 d, at 36 mm/h) and, 7 repeated rain events at 3-day intervals, on runoff nutrient concentrations after surface application of broiler litter. Runoff was collected for 18 min after onset of runoff.

Bermudagrass.was established on Ruston sandy loam soil in (144x20x10) troughs set at a 7% slope.

Broiler litter was applied equivalent to a rate of 9 Mg/ha, (320 kg N and 150 kg P/ha). Increased time between litter application and occurrence of rain (0 to 9 d) reduced total N and NH4-N by 72 and 62% respectively when compared to initial day 0 values. Similarly, total P and water soluble P in runoff also decreased by 35 and 40 % respectively. Decreased total N, NH4-N and P concentrations in runoff could be due to mineralization of organic N, and NH3 volatilization, and sorption of P by soil.

Repeated rain events were performed after 9 days of litter application, runoff N and P concentrations decreased with repeated rain events. No significant differences in N and P concentrations were observed between treated and control plots after 7 repeated rain events. Runoff N and P

concentrations may be reduced if poultry litter is applied during periods of the year when intensive rainfalls are not likely.
