Abstract:

The reduction of nitrate by naturally occurring ferrous iron minerals is a potential pathway in the nitrogen cycle that is poorly understood. The present study was performed to investigate the effect of siderite and magnetite on nitrate reduction. Stirred batch kinetic experiments were carried out with 10 g L-1 siderite and magnetite over a range of initial nitrate concentrations (1 to 10 mM) at pH 5.5 and 7 under anoxic conditions. Changes in nitrate concentration were negligible in the presence of siderite over a period of about 90 days. Magnetite reduced nitrate slowly with transient formation of nitrite at pH 5.5.
